Question about Dell Latitude CPX Notebook

1 Answer

Is it possible to run two CD drives with the jump cable?

I have a Dell CPx, and it has the cable that allows you to run both a floppy disk drive, and the CD at the same time. Does anyone know how, if it is even possible, to run an additional CD drive, with a CD drive inserted into the computer? I have hooked it up, but it still shows that the additional drive that I have added with the cable, is a floppy, when it is actually a CD/RW DVD ROM drive. If anyone out there has the answer, or knows how to configure it, I would appreciate you letting me know at thomsonprof@msn.com.
Thanks!!

It figures. I own about 15 Dell Latitudes, as I use to do lease buy backs, and sell them at the HamFest in Dayton, Ohio a few years back. I can take them apart, fix them, and do just about anything with them, but for the life of me, I could not figure this optical thing out. The one that I currently use as my personal laptop has a regular CD-ROM, and whenever I put a CD/RW or DVD into the port on the computer, it takes the whole system down for some reason, and just will not work. I have no idea what the problem is, as I have never had this happen to me. I just was hoping that I could ad the CD/RW to the jump cord to burn CD's, but I guess that is impossible!! Thanks for all of your help!!

The Latitude CPx only has the capability of running 2 IDE devices (1 HDD, 1 CD-ROM) The optical drive can be connect via the drive bay in the chassis or the Cable. If Optical drive is connected via cable only the floppy can be used in the bay.

In short, you can't use 2 optical drives at once.

Older dell latitude cpx running XP. yesterday after loading firefox and a few mozzilla add ons .. today I boot to error 0 no primary hard disk found.. bios says no hdd installed ????

Hello, Jay.

Well, as the message indicates, your hard disk drive is failing or failed. Try running your diagnostics to verify (boot and press F2 or F12 repeatedly).

If the hard drive is failing, see if someone locally can help to retrieve your documents and other files by removing the drive and setting up the drive as a slave drive on another computer.

The drive would then need to be replaced. Price the same type of drive but it may not be cost-effective to use another drive in this computer.

Hope this helps.

How to erase operating system on laptop

First you must boot from a CD or DVD or from a floppy disk and not from the hard drive.

Creating a Windows XP boot disk

Note: The Microsoft Windows XP CD is a bootable CD and in many cases you should not need a bootable floppy diskette. Booting from the Windows XP CD will allow you to not only install/re-install Windows XP but will also allow you to troubleshoot it.

Create MS-DOS bootable diskette

When formatting a floppy diskette, users have the option of creating a MS-DOS startup disk, follow the below steps to do this.

  1. Place diskette in the computer.
  2. Open My Computer, right-click the A: drive and click Format.
  3. In the Format window, check Create an MS-DOS startup disk.
  4. Click Start
How to boot from Microsoft Windows XP CD.

Dell Inspiron 8200 won't continue start up

This stop error means that your ntfs file system is corrupt (damage in the file system, bad hard drive data, corrupt SCSI or IDE drivers or a corrupt ntfs.sys file).

How do resovle the problem.
There are two ways,

1, If you still can access Windows, try to disable any backup programs, virus scanning programs or disk defragmenter tools. Try also to run a hardware diagnostics tool to detect any errors your hard drive might have. And run chkdsk /r to detect and repair any file system structural damage.

2, If you are unable to load Windows. Then you should try to access your ntfs partitions by making a ntfs boot disk with NTFS4DOS (freeware). You can download it from http://www.geekswhoknow.com/files/ntfsinst.exe You will need a floppy disk.

After you load the bootable floppy disk onto your damaged system, select either option one (1) or option three (3). If you selected option one (1), type chkdsk /r at the command prompt, and your problem should go away after the disk has been repaired.

Note! Unfortunately there is a chance that your partition is corrupt beyond repair and all of your data is lost. In that case, you need to reformat the partition to be able to use it again.

Good luck!

Need to upgrade

Yes call Fries Electronics let them know what model laptop you have they can tell you the type of memory you need SoDimm more then likely, they will give you a price. It is better to remove the old memory and take it with you when you go to buy it has to match. Also you can ask what is the largest recommended hard drive they have for this model laptop, probably 60gb. The motherboard for that laptop does have limitations. That laptop probably does not have a built in wireless card so you can either use a hard wire RJ45 Data cable and plug the other end into your Internet Router, or you can purchase a PCMCIA Wireless Card to insert into the slot on the side of the laptop. This PCMCIA Card will allow you to access the internet wirelessly. You have now beefed up your CPx Latitude.

How to upgrade a Dell Latitude CPX - Intel P3 500-650 laptop

I have a CPX H500GT. To get it to run XP Pro to run right, max out the ram. And get a larger harddrive. Xp uses a substantial amount of space.

Can't start windows

The issue you are having is that your computer is not seeing the harddrive or the boot drive. This could be a simple fix from the bios by telling the computer what device it needs to boot from which in this case is your hard drive.

You say that it did work and it was working how long ago was that? It also could be more serious in which you hard drive has crashed or exceeded its MTBF (which means "mean time before failure").

Hello dazz_hammer,

You can put up to Windows XP. If do, I would suggest to add memory and bigger hard drive.

Or if the pc has Windows Product Key Tag, and what ever the operating system it indicates then you can re-install that operating system.

Hope this helps and good luck.

You might be able to get some more memory for it and a bigger hard drive. Depends on what the model number is.
