Question about Singer 1120 Mechanical Sewing Machine

1 Answer

I have a singer model 1120 that is in its first use. I threaded the machine correctly, however, the handwheel appears to have too much tension and will not allow me to go down far enough to sew. Is there anyone that can help a sewing novice? thanks.

Have you checked your bobbin, mine sometimes gets the needle thread stuck underneath the bobbin and it all gets really tight and won't let the needle go down enough to sew.

My brother vx-1120 needle wont pick up bobbin thread to make a continuous stitch

Install a brand new needle. Make sure it is installed correctly.

Remove the bobbin/bobbin case from the machine. Check that the bobbin is turning the correct direction and the bobbin tension is threaded correctly. Reinstall the bobbin case and confirm that it is latched into place.

Retest your machine. Slowly turn the handwheel and watch the needle descend and see if it picks up the bobbin thread. If not, then there is probably a sewing machine timing issue. Take it for service.

Model 9117. Why won't it sew?

Remove all the thread. Raise the presser foot BEFORE threading the upper thread so it will seat properly in the tension disk. Confirm with the manual that the needle is inserted facing the correct way and verify that everything is threaded correctly. Somewhere I read to use only Singer needles in Singer machine--don't know if that's true, but...

Also appears that this machine takes a special bobbin:

There could be a knick or burr somewhere that is catching the thread. You can test it by lightly rubbing an old pair of pantyhose on areas (under the needle plate) and see if it catches anywhere. If the knick is not bad, you can try to smooth it with a fine emery board. Otherwise, could require a replacement part.

If you can, observe the stitching mechanism while you hand-rotate the handwheel and see if you can tell where the thread is hanging up. Hopefully you will be able to see where the machine is failing to operate.

What should I do if the top thread keeps breaking off?

Reduce tension. Perhaps it is very thin - or cheap thread? Or very old thread?
If so, replace with good thread.

If that is OK, them try to lessen the tension.

Be sure that the machine has been cleaned and oiled. Check to be sure the machine is threaded correctly. Check to make sure the bobbin was wound properly.

How do i thread a singer model #1120 sewing machine?

You can download your manual directly from singer. It has illustrated instructions. Go to http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html and put your model number (1120) in the search box. This will bring you to the download page.
I've included an image of the page on threading your machine below:

I have just aquired a old singer machine that is straight stitch only. The problem i am having is when sewing the top stitch is slightly diagonal, while the underneath is straight. I have tried...

Are you sure that you have an 1120 because I looked up your manual (it is free on www.singerco.com under the customer support tab) and it is not just a straight stitch machine. If, it is not an 1120 put your correct number in and read the manual. Look on the back of your machine for your model number.

Bobbin

IMPORTANT: Always use a metal bobbin, or the magnetized bobbin case will not be able to function properly, resulting in a lack of tension on the bobbin thread.
9a8cb19.jpg Step 1:
Turn the handwheel counter-clockwise until the needle is in its highest position. Raise the presser foot lifter. Pull the slide plate forward and remove the empty bobbin.
Step 2:
Place the filled bobbin into the bobbin case, and pull about 4" of thread from the new bobbin. Make sure that the bobbin turns clockwise when the thread is pulled, or you will not have correct tension when you begin to sew.
Step 3:
Hold the needle thread loosely with your left hand. Turn the handwheel toward you, first lowering the needle, and continuing to turn the handwheel until the needle comes to its highest position.
Step 4:
Lightly pull up the needle thread and pick up the bobbin thread which will appear through the needle plate slot. Then pull both threads to the back of the machine leaving a 4" thread tail. Push slide plate back in.

Hope this helps. -samson39
