Most DVD drives have two lenses - one for CD's and another to read DVD's. It could be that the CD lens on your drive is failing. Try using a CD lens cleaner (available in most electronic shops). If that doesnt work, then the lens is scratched and will have to be replaced.
If that is the case, then I suggest buying a new DVD drive, as it would be cheaper than attempting a repair.

Sound problem after upgrading windows

see let me tell you that windows 7 makes a computer very slow and may be your lapp's configuration supports windows 7 but could not process the datas.it seems to be a load on the lappy.still you can get the sound,by installing the lappy's motherboard disc where you will get the audio and video drivers.actually windows 7 does not need any audio or video drivers but windows 7 has the upgraded drivers which is not suitable for the lappy.so you need to install your own drivers which are compatible.

Not able to recover windows on toshiba l300

You need to get disk for Vista from anyone and then use your windows product key mentioned on the sticker on back of your Toshiba Laptop to install Vista again on your computer. But as you had already formatted it so all data is lost now.

Hp compaq 6720s says pxe - e61

PXE is the boot option from a bootable network card, so basically the BIOS isn't seeing any of your bootable drives and going trying to PXE-boot off your network. Check the boot options in your BIOS and make sure your drives are detected by the BIOS. If they are not listed, then the drive has likely gone bad.

I cant find the xd slot for my toshiba satellite l300d

Sorry all_smiles_0 but I'll possibly wipe your smile away with the fact that your lappy only supports

SD, card, SDHC card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Multi Media card

I don't see Xd in the list, so, the reason you can't find a slot is that it doesn't have one...

However there is a silver lining, you lappy has vista which supports the vast majority of cameras natively. Try finding the USB/Firewire/1394 port on your camera and hooking it directly to your lappy and you may find the vista picture wizard appears on it's own and offers to import the pics. If it doesn't, don't worry many of the main accessory manufactures io, startech and the like make USB based Xd readers, if you have no reader and your cam won't download without you shoud be able to find one for $20-$30 at your local computer store.

Hope this helps,

CD/DVD player doesn't read disc

Unless it's a hardware problem, (physically damaged, replace drive), then it sounds like a driver issue. Over time drivers (the software that runs the hardware) can be corrupted, get into a compatability conflict with new programs, or lost by the system. You obviously can't reinstall the drivers from your recovery discs, but you can (usually) download them from your manufacturer's website.

In your Start menu's search, type Device Manager. Open DM and expand the + next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.

If your drive is not listed in there, then it's not installed, download it's software from your manufacturer's website.

If your drive is listed but has a 9b861c0.gif next to it, then there's a driver problem. Double click the drive and note what it says under "Device Status" on the General tab. Go to the Driver tab and click "Update Driver..." Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software" and Windows will search both your computer and the internet for the proper drivers for your device.

Even if your drive is listed and it's status is "device is working properly" you may still need to reinstall the drivers. Often there can be a driver conflict that your computer is not aware of to report back. In any case, before replacing the drive you'll definately want to try fixing the drivers.

Hope this helps

Disc drive wont work

It sounds like the laser may have went out. When reading a disc the laser moves up and down as well as back and forth. It sounds like it is reading from the wrong position if it's reading at all. Remove any disc from the drive. Go into the device manager and remove/uninstall the drive from the list. Reboot the computer, wait until the hardware wizard reinstalls it and then try reading another disc. If this doesn't help then most likely the laser has went bad. It is not an uncommon problem. You can also see if there is a firmware update for your drive from the maufacturers website or your PC speciffic website. Hope this helps.

Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-840S Problem

CD drives work by reflecting a laser to a sensor, where the existance or absence of a reflected signal corresponds to a 1 or a 0 in the binary code.

Prefessional "pressed" CD have a much greater level of "contrast" between 1 and 0, while CD-Rs have a lower contrast and CD-RWs lower still. This is why many older CD players that were not designed to read CD-Rs will either not read writable disks, or will read only CD-Rs and not CD-RWs.

Since you are able to read "high contrast" CDs but not lower contrast CD-Rs, it sounds as though your drive is getting a poorer signal than it did when it was new. This could be:

The laser is old and fading out.
The system is mis-aligned.
The lens is dirty and the signal is not all passing through to be detected.

You can't do much about the first two, other than buying a new drive (you could get a replacement internal one, or an external USB CD drive). However, before you do that, try very carefully cleaning the lens. A laptop CD drive usually has a try with the lens mounting in it which spits out with the CD, so you could either clean it manually with a little rubbing alcohol (isoproyl alcohol), or meths on a cotton-wool bud, or preferably get a lens-cleaning CD and run that in the drive.

Hope it works!
