Have Gateway M6866 Laptop. Will not boot. when power button is pressed. you hear a fan start power light comes on, harddrive light and a few others comes on for 2 seconds then goes off. screen is always...

If it never posts anything to the screen then more than likely you've got a video card issue. It could be the memory also.

When you plug in the power cord is there any lightswhatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of thepower cord?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning,lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear theDvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for asecond or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, butthe screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous. Most times the problemis with the memory or Video Card. Count the Blinking Lights or Beeps and takenote of their pattern (1 Long or 1 Long followed by 2 Short).

Maybe your power cord is bad if you don't get anything to happen whatsoeverwhen you press the power button. And if that's true maybe you wasoperating off the battery the last time you had it on and since the power cordis bad, it was not charging the battery so the battery is drained and the powercord is bad.

Maybe you have a Static Charge Buildup. Remove the Power Cord, Remove theBattery, then Press and Hold the power button for 30seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cord back in (leave the batteryout) and hit the power button to see if it boots. If it does, you can putthe battery back in and let it charge.Maybe your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugsinto the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside thejack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have totake the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto themotherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.Maybe your memory is bad or the memory slot is bad.Remove the Power Cord, Remove the Battery, Remove the cover that houses the memory on the bottom of the laptop then remove one of thememory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer. If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark an x onit with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the nextmemory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set itaside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If itboots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it and putit into the open memory chip slot and try booting.

Screen won't come on.

Screen won't come on when? When you first hit the power button to boot it up? Does anything ever post to the screen when you hit the Power Button? Or does it seem like it booted up all the way (you hear the fan running, you hear the hard drive spinning) except the screen is black?

If it seems like it booted up all the way except the screen is black try the steps below.

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barely see the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves your video card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash light and nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card is bad.

If it does not seem like it booted up all the way try the steps below:

When you plug in the power cord is there any lights whatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of the power cord?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear the DvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for a second or two? How can i get my sylvania netbook to work when i turn it on and it wont do anything all it does is stay at a black screen? Need help with my sylvania computer problems

When you plug in the power cord do you see any lights either on the power cord's adapter or on the computer that indicates that the power cord is plugged in? If not, your power cord might be bad. You might have been running off your battery for the last time you used it and since the power cord was bad it was not charging your battery so it eventually drained all battery power.

When you turn it on do you hear any fans running, any hard drive running, cd drive clicks once and you see the light on the cd drawer come on for a second or two, lights anywhere on the computer? If so these are signs that the computer is trying to boot. If not you might have a motherboard issue.

Static Charge Buildup can also cause the computer not to boot. Remove the power cord and battery from the laptop. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds then put the power cord back in (leave the battery out) and try to reboot. If it boots, you had a static charge buildup and can put the battery back in now.

Is the computer actually up and running but the screen is black? If so take a flashlight and shine it on the black screen. If you can bearly see the icons on the desktop that means your lcd inverter is bad and needs to be replaced.

If the computer is actually up and running but the screen is black, try hooking an external monitor to the laptop. You can use any type of monitor, even the big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to plug into the laptops vga port. You might have to press the FN (Function Key) and one of the F1 thru F12 function keys to get the image to display. Normally the correct F1 thru F12 key will have CRT/LCD written on it or it will have an icon of a display. Press and Hold the FN key then hit the correct F1 thru F12 Key to display the image on the external monitor. If it shows, that means your Video Card is ok.

If the computer is on and running but the screen is black, you don't see any icons on the desktop when you use a flashlight then your lcd screen will probably need to be replaced. It might be something as simple as the lCD Cable is loose or just needs reseated (pulled aloose then plugged back).

You'll have to take the screen apart to get to the lcd inverter and the lcd cables.

Briefly: laptop cant turn on Detail: After pushed power button, the note book didn't turn on. Screen kept black. Power button didn't light on(usually should). The laptop is without any sound...

The first solution I'd recommend is removing the battery and then trying to power on just with the AC adapter. Why are you afraid to remove the battery? no data will be lost.

It maybe that you have a dead motherboard or that there had been a power failure while you were putting your machine to hibernate.

Black screen but power lights are on and will not shut down or do anything

Hi

I would turn the laptop carefully upside down making sure that the power cord is NOT connected and remove the battery usually a slide catch or something similar holding it in position

hopefully that will cut all power to the laptop and hence hopefully shut down

when light go out and you can hear nothing then put battery back in and use power cord if needed

When i turn on my notebook it is just black..the screen is blank i cant see anything on my desktop

How I tackle laptop screen stay blank after turning on the power switch?
1. Make sure the power is off.
2. Make sure the lap top is not plugged in (charging cord is not plugged in).
3. Remove the battery from the bottom.
4. Hold the power button for 30 to 60 seconds.
5. Plug in the power cord.
6. Turn it on as usual.
If the above instructions doesn't work, try removing and reseating the RAM sticks in the Notebook by following the guides available from page number in the Manual of the Notebook. Try starting the Notebook with one RAM module inserted and do try by inserting one RAM stick in another.
BTW, If not, you can try to buy a Laptop LCD Screen Replacement ( one of my friend got it for replacement in Papatek)

I cut it on i can hear it starting up but my screen is black can you fix it

Hi and welcome to Fixya.

I want you to try and shine a bright light; like a flashlight on the screen for me;

If you see anything (even very faint) then your problem is that you need a new back light for it. If this is the case, it is usually really cheap on places like Amazon.com

If it is still black; try taking out the battery;

remove power cord;

hold power button for half a minute;

Then; plug your power cord back in;

Turn on computer;

and replace your battery.

If it is still totally black, you may have to replace the screen for it.

Please rate this solution if it was helpful. It doesn't cost anything, only takes a minute and is greatly appreciated!
