thanks map9966, but i guess i should have said that i connected the jumper pin leading from the case to connect to the mobo. the manual said that this would act as the correct jumpers. the case is a Rosewill R5601. i did what it said to do. should i disconnect the clip and reinstall the jumpers? if so, how will i be able to use the jack on the front of the case? thanks ahead for any help!!! chris

Hi Chris, the problem can be one of two issues. If the sound jack located at the back of the PC did function at the same time as the front case sound jack. Than the problem is the jack it's self is bad. (Back of PC). Someone had to hook up the front mic & sound jack to the motherboard. So disconnecting the front sound & mic may give you rear sound & mic.
Turn to page 2-29 in you're user manual for the Asus M2N-SLI. The pic shown is the default setting for the front case audio & mic. (What you do see are the two jumpers connected). So disconnect any connector & place a jumper over pins 9 & 10, (last two pins at the right of the two rows of pins). Place another jumper over pins 5 & 6.
Pin 1 is the first pin on the left bottom row (MIC2). Pin 2 is the first pin, left edge top row (AGND). Pin 8 is not installed but you still count its spot as if there was a pin. (This is how the board was setup from factory). Once you fix this you should regain sound & mic function at the rear of the PC. To fine tune the audio run the Asus sound effect manager. If you installed this software, (Recommended). If it’s not by you're clock than it’s in control panel.

Good point! I did have that in mind. Normally I would ask you to send me you're s/n & I would call Asus myself. It should function in HD mode for both, rear & front. It's the weekend on my end & I'll have to wait untill Monday to call Asus. If you wish to do so you're self this is their number: 1-812-282-2787 M-F 8:00AM to 5:00PM EST. You will need the S/N of the board. It's located on the LPT port, as seen only from the inside of the case. These call's are free for me. I still need the s/n to make the call.

I'm pretty sure there is another adjustment that can be made but I'm getting too old & should type this stuff down more often.

    Sorry Chris!

In my experience, there are some fans that are loud. It could be bad bushings or possibly a fan that is out of balance. The Cool and Quiet utility will not solve that problem.
Are you sure it's the CPU fan?
If the computer (or it's parts) are less than a year old, they should be under warranty.
If it's the case fan, I'd replace it with either a new single-speed fan or one that has a variable speed adjustment.

On board audio problem

Hi, do you have you're manual? The answer to you're questions are there.
There are three femal plugs on the back side of the motherboard for sound out-put/mic-output & sound in-put. There ia also the option (For most cases), front plugs. Sound = out & mic=out.
See page 2-22/2-23, for rear connectors (What goes where).
Goto to page 2-29 to see Front panel audio connector (10-1 pin FP_Audio).

If you do not have you're user manual you can download it from Asus. Click on the link below.

Video card

This may sound weird, but remove ram to make it 2 gigs and try it again, some mobo's have issues with 4 gigs. 3 gigs usually works too.

Ethernet controller

1. Remove network card and see if restarts go away.
2. Remove all but one RAM stick and try it, swap that ram with one of the others and try again.
3. Try another power supply.

4. If windows was installed previously with old mobo, you may need to do a repair install of windows or wipe it and start over.

Asus m2n E Sli board audio

I had the same problem, and it went away when I connected the the front speakers via the 'ac97' connector from the case, instead of the HD audio connector. It seems using the HD audio connector, as well as using no connector and forgetting to put back the jumpers originally set over 2 of the front audio connectors pins, will cause no audio from the back ports.
