Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a Kitchenaid refrigerator with a frost free refrigerator built in 1997 and in good working condition. Water runs down the back of the refrig and collects underneath the crisper bins. What can I do to fix this problem?

Hello, welcome to FixYa.

This is just the normal operation...specifically the defrost cycle every frost free unit must cycle through every 8-12 hours.

You are correct, the sizzle is water (from the melting ice) dripping onto the defrost heater. It is all normal so no need to worry.

Hello,
For your first problem i need a bit of a clarification. Is what your saying, when you dispense ice through the door some water also comes out of the dispenser??

For the glow that is perfectly normal, what your seeing is the glow of the defrost heater melting off the biult up frost. If it did not come on and melt the frost the refrig would not be cooling. The term"FROST FREE" is a bit misleading. Their is automatic defrost refrigerators such as the one you have, and the manul defrost that you need to defrost manually every month.

Water is dripping from the top of refrig from what appears to be a control unit of some type.. The freezer and icemaker work.

If the water is dripping into the ref. from the freezser chances are you have a clogged drain where the water runs out of when the machine goes into defrost. Take everything out of the freezer and look at the back of the machine and see if you have ice built up. The vents that ru from the freezer to the ref. are loacted in the middle and chances are ice has gotten into them and is thawing and running into the fridge. Unplug the machine, take the back freezer wall off and clear the ice away. I use a screwdriver to tap into the drain hole to clear the ice but you can use hot water as well. Once you see water draining properly down the hole, put it back together and your good to go.

My kenmore refrigerator isn't getting cold enough

Solution for laywoman, running off from normal is not a good description. Say is is not cold enough for your use, the normal range is 0 def for freezer and 44 for refrig.
If is is bit warm, say 50 deg refrig, 10 deg freeer. then check it the evaporator coils a frosting up. Check by pressing against the back suface and listen for ice build up back there. Do you remember the refrigerator defrosting ?, and listening for the condensate to drip into the pan on a daily basis, say about 6 hours. and next check your condenser under the refrig. vacuum and brush clean the asselmbly. of condenser radiator coils. Was there water liquid. water , a bit, in the water pan. How is refrig operating now?
Not good enough, then pull the or say unscrew the screws holding the back panel. See the black can compressor, with pipe tubes sticking out. While running. it may be that the tube on the left is cooler than the one on thel right. Is the warmer tube very hot to the touch.
If the tube temperatures are not too different to the hand touch feeling, OR if the back freezer surfaces are frosting it is time to call for a tradesman. Good Luck..

Kitchenaid Superba compressor

The compressor relay is located on the compressor under a cover. Before you go to the compressor I would check for other problems that you can see and hear. If the compressor is running there is nothing wrong with its relay.
1. Check the condenser and make sure it is clear and free of dust.
2. If the compressor is cool or cold check for a bad temperature control.
3. Check the freezer compartment for frost on back wall.

Refrigator oart is not working

Is your refrigerator a frost free model? If so do you have any frost in the freezer compartment such as on the back wall? It is possible that you have a defrost cycle problem, or your condenser coil where heat is transfered to the outside air is restricted, or your refrigerator could have a leak of refrigerant and with the

Kitchenaid side by side refrigerator

First thing I would check...is this unit frosting up? Turn it off for two days...with the doors open...to defrost completely. Clean out the condenser coils with a brush. Inspect and clean any gaskets not sealing. When restarting...open up the back panel and check the compressor. It is that big black thing. Find and clean off the largest pipe. Watch the pipe...It will frost initially on startup. Does the frost remain after 5 minutes or turn to ice, water or dry out? If still frosty, you are low on gas. If other conditions, then you either are opening the door too often, those gaskets are damaged or you have defrost issues.
