Question about Sony Alpha DSLR-A350K Digital Camera

Open Question

I have a Sony Alpha 350 DSLR and I have a hand with an exclamation mark in it, the shutter will not operate either. I have replaced the battery and memory card, done a reset to default and it is still there, any clues? It was working perfectly until I swapped the battery to a re-charged one. Pauline

SOURCE: MY MEMORY CARDS NO LONGER

Hi! I just had the same problem with my Sony A100, when I tried two different CF cards. Thinking the camera is broken, I checked online camera repair sites and also called Sony directly. Sony's flat rate, and that of PrecisionCamera is $228 to fix CF card failure. Then my daughter said, "the CF card in my room works fine in the camera" - and lo and behold - it does. The CF card that works is brand PQI and is marked Hi-Speed 60 2Gb. The cards that do NOT work are marked SanDisk Ultra II 1.0Gb and SanDisk 128 Mb. So my advice is, before you give up on the camera as broken, try a number of different CF cards first.

The second cause of CF failure is if someone has pushed a CF card in the wrong way. That can bend one or more of the tiny metal contact pins in the CF socket in the camera. Look carefully to see that all the pins are straight up. [I don't know how one can straighten these pins, or if the whole socket would need to be replaced...but at least you can determine the cause of the CF failure.

Best regards - Michael

SOURCE: Sony Alpha 100 gives error message when attempting to take pic.

Hi! I just had the same problem with my Sony A100, when I tried two different CF cards. I was getting the same error message as reported above: "Unable to use card" then "Format?" then that format fails. SOURCE: MY BUILT-IN FLASH NO LONGER WORKS WITH MY SONY ALPHA 300 DSLR

In that case it's broken and is not a DIY fix. Usually it's either the flash tube or flash charging circuitry/capacitor, and they're the sort of things which can just fail suddenly.

Your camera will still be under the manufacturer's one year worldwide warranty, so contact Sony in your country to find out what the local arrangements are.

You'll need to provide proof of the purchase date, if you cannot do so then the repair will be chargeable; Sony have a fixed fee policy for dSLR repairs and if you're in the UK then it's currently £114.56.

Note that if you're in the UK then you additionally have Sale of Goods Act protection for up to six years (five in Scotland). The Act states thaty goods must be of durable quality with respect to the price paid and intended use. Clearly the camera should not fail within such a short space of time so you may be able to return the camera and demand a refund from the retailer. Enforcing your rights is sometimes a different story altogether, but note that if you accept a repair from the retailer then you future rights to reject the goods are severely reduced.

One further VITAL point: if there is even the slightest evidence of any unauthorised repair attempts, all your consumer rights vanish.

On balance, I'd strongly recommend that you either return the camera for exchange/refund or return it to Sony under warranty.

Hope that this helps, all that I ask in return is for you to take a moment to rate my answer.

Sony a100 wont turn on

If the battery is charged, try replacing the battery first. Also try turning on the camera with the charger plugged in. If neither helps, you will probably need to have the camera sent for repairs, but you can still try checking out the user manual for helpful information:

Hello, I'm having troubles with my camera, a sony alpha 580 dslr. I try to take a picture and the shutter stays down a few seconds when I don't have it set to that and it is making these awful grinding...

sounds like the shutter chain is slipping, or shutter is sticking, this does not look good. you may need to have the body replaced, usually camera shops will tell you that the repair costs more than the replacement.

i would take to a sony dealer for further advice, I assume you are still under garantee you should be ok. as this model only came onto the market last august. and usually has 24 months cover on parts.

I hope this was useful.

Press the Drive button (marked with a one-handed clock). Use left/right to select the one-handed clock. Use up/down to select the delay, then press the OK in the middle of the cursor pad. Start the self-timer by pressing the shutter release button.
