Hoover steam vac, brushes won't rotate, have cleaned filter by brushes, removed brushes and they rotate okay when off steam vac, tried to ajust level for carpet cleaning and brushes still don't move

  • Caleb K Aug 30, 2008

Hoover steam vac is 7 years old. brushes won't rotate. follow instructions to clean the filter. still won't rotate. shaft is intact. brushes rotate manually. suspect air flow problem, or gear problem, but no way to asses unless I take it apart or have it serviced.

I have exactly the same problem. The design is terrible. About 3 monhs ago I had the same issue, took to the shop and the tech said that he did not find any problem. Now I have the same... If the turbine is clogged, then how to clean it without rushing into the repair shop. After some "travels" to the shop it looks like I paid double for this cleaner...

There are three things to check when experiencing 'no spin' on the cleaning brushes. 1) Check the small pull out filter screen under the machine. It must stay clean for air to pass to the turbine which powers the brushes. 2) Check that the long shaft on the brush assembly is not broken off. This shaft inserts into the turbine motor and powers the brushes. If you're handy you can replace just the long shaft brush rather than replacing the whole brush assembly. Look for the brush on Ebay 3) If you're handy you can dissemble the machine and inspect the turbine motor which powers the brushes. In all cases the bearings seize in the turbine. You can often free them up and re-lube them to get more service from them or simply replace the turbine assembly. Don't throw your Steam Vac out because the brushes no longer turn...you can fix it!

I took our Hoover in to the Hoover repair shop and got it fixed for under $50.00.  The probelm? The design allows water to get into the bearing and it won't work any more.  The problem solely lies on Hoover.  It is cheaper to get it fixed than purchase a new carpet cleaner even though the problem shouldn't have existed at all.  I am upset with Hoover for not giving owners a free fix on this one. Check to see if the shaft on the brush block hasn't broken off. Otherwise it is the turbine that drives the brushes and is either clogged up inside or needs to be replaced.

Brushes won't rotate on hoover steam vac. I have removed them and cleaned.

The brushes turn by the airflow from the vacuum suction turning a turbine motor to spin the brushes. First try to spin the brushes by hand. If they won't turn it usually means the brushes are clogged with hair and debris or need replaced or the turbine could be seized up. If the brushes won't spin reach under the brushes and push the little tabs and remove the brush block asssembly from the machine. If the brushes spin freely after you remove them from the machine then that means that most likely the turbine is seized and will need to be repaced. If the turbine is not seized you may simply just have a clogged filter screen. Most steam vacs have a red screen filter either on top or underneath the machine. On the top it is under a little clear plastic cover that you have to pry off before you can pull the screen out to clean it. If it's underneath you can pull it out and clean it.

Hoover steam vac model f7425-900 filter is

The brush system on this model has a poor engineering design in that the brushes are running off an air turbine, which uses a steel bushing to spin the turbine which gets rusty from the moisture when the machine is being used. No long term solver. I would replace the machine with a Dirt Devil Platinum Force model

Hoover Steam VAc carpet Model F7425-900

Take out the brush block, make sure that the shaft is ok, it goes up into the turbine, which is what drives the brushes. If the shaft is ok, then the turbine either needs to be cleaned and lubed, or replaced.

Hoover steam vac model 7210-900

Did you clean both filters? There is one on the tank and the other is from the bottom, it ha a red frame, pull it out to clean. Pull the brush block out, is the shaft that goes up into the machine broken off? If so replace the brush block. While it is out, trn the machine on and see if the square hole up where the brush block goes, is turning. If not then the turbine has gone bad. You can sometimes clean the turbine out, otherwise replacing it may be the best option.

Spin brushes spin freely on steam vac when not attached to cleaner indicator screen not dirty speed selector is in high position brushes are clean spin brush indicator when brushes attached to machine...

If this is a Hoover Steam vac, the turbine which drives the brushes is bad. If not a Hoover, then what is it, they are different, need brand and model number.

brushes do not rotate on Hoover steam-vac upright

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
This also happened to my own Hoover Steam Vac and there was a broken part that connected to the brush assm that I had to replace, it has been a while but once they replaced the part everything worked just fine and it was not that expensive and I am still using the vacuum still to date and it is working just fine. I believe it was something like the switch for the brushes on/off switch or the part was part of the handle assm. Check you owner’s manual for the exploded view on the vacuum or also check with your local vac dealer. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Problems with the Hoover Steam vac Heated carpet cleaner

This happens when the filter on the inside of the lid for the dirty water tank is pushed all of the way up. You need to leave a 1/4 in. gap from the top to the top of the filter.
