Question about LG 42PX5D 42 in. Plasma HDTV

LG Plasma/TV 50PX5D

Very happily watching TV. Heard a loud pop and the TV went dead. We shut it down and waited a but. Turned it back on and all we get is audio -- black screen. We're just out of the 2 year warranty. Is there any kind of troubleshooting we could try before we call out the professionals????

    I have the same exact problem. Loud pop, no picture except during really bright scenes then it looks like a smear across the bright portion. Audio and channel controls all work. Problem is independent of input source. Also slightly beyond the two years warranty. The tech who came to my place quoted $750 to start. He said that the zsus and ysus boards needs to be replaced, but other things could have been fried. Is there any credence to this or am I being taken for a ride? I'm debating since another $750 and I can get a fairly good non 1080p panel.

    Same exact proble. Called LG Support. Explained problem in a very nice tone and told them that noticed it seems to be a common problem. Told them that reason I bought LG was they had a 2-year warranty, which caused me to believe they were confident in quality of their products since most manufacturers only do 1-year. That's also why I didn't do extended warranty. I asked them if they could please help in any way considering I was only 4 months out of warranty and was a "big LG fan." They have agreed to cover it under warranty- parts and labor included.



    I am pleased with their response and professionalism. I think that the tone you take with them will have a lot to do with their response. Good luck.

    My LG 50px5d was purchased 3/06. Same issue - loud pop noise & screen went blank. Called customer service immediatly & they offered to pay parts & I pay labor.... That sucks - just out of warranty. I am calling back & nicely seeing if they will pay 100%. I will let you know..

    Same problem happened to me, Video is gone, How expensive is this going to cost, the tv cost is almost $2000 but we do have it for less than 2 years, So is it still under a warranty?

Likely blew a cap or diode in the power supply ,
if you stay out of it then it will cost less to service,
techs hate to work on a mess of someone else's

The technician that quoted you is right on point. I service these televisions and that is exactly what happens. A lot of times we can replace the Y drive and Z Sustain board, but sometimes it will knock out the upper and or lower drive boards. The y drive and z sustain boards total about $400 in parts and after labor, a trip charge to the home, labor and tax, you would spend about $700-$800. Add about $100 each for the upper and lower drive boards.

A popped cap or diode in the power supply would result in a dead set. However, if you hear audio still, it is going to be those two boards and possibly more.

Loud pop sound, still have sound, image is still there but very washed out, looks like the red color is muted, when tv is turned on the black color seems to melt away LG 50PX5D HDTV plasma


you have a blown cap in your lg's power board the electoletic cap looks like a can and the bad one will have a domed top where it vented the value is written on the side you can replace them or have it done and you should be good to go

My lg plazma has loud pop at start up


You may have problem with the power supply. The only thing in a TV that can make loud pops is high voltage. There are seriously HIGH VOLTAGES in a plasma TV.
I WOULD NOT OPERATE this TV until it has been checked by a qualified TV technician. The pop means something may be shorting. If it shorts to the frame, you can be seriously injured.

LG plasma tv made loud popping noise


The plasma gas tubes may be damaged or the gas couldve leak out. remember plasma have to remain upright at all times even when transporting them, if they are not you should just set it up straight for about 3-4 hours before turning it on.

Unfortunately, that board is the inverter board. And for this model the inverter board is only supplied with the the PDP panel. The panel is quite expensive, here's a link if needed:

LG 50px10 loud noise & then color and image quality loss.


call 877-543-8325 this is an LG Executive call center and they will fix this for free. I have a 50" plasma I bought january 2006 which is out of warranty by 5 months. They faxed me and the LG repair shop a 30 day warranty for my tv to cover the repair. Just tell them you heard a pop and in my case the picture is distorted. All they need is the model number and serial number and they should take care of it. No arguing needed.
