i have the same problem. No power to im7 and seeing a spark when the power cable is plugged in at the back of the unit. Any ideas??

I am having the same experience -suddenly, with no abuse or anything.

My Altec Lansing im7 worked for a few months, but now doesn't power up. It's as if the power button is inoperative - the power light doesn't light up when the power button is pressed, nor do I even hear the "spark" that the previous commenter hears.

i have the same problem any solution?

Same problem here. Mine worked just fine for over a year. Then it just stopped. The LED doesn't light up. I tried batteries as well and that didn't change anything.

I'm having the same problem with my IM7. It worked perfectly for a year then began spontaneously powering off after 10-15 minutes if play. After that point, I could power it back up by pressing the power button but it would only play for a few minutes before shutting off again. I called Altec Lansing and was told that the IM7 is no longer in production. The service rep said it might be the power supply but I have not been able to locate a genuine one or even a generic power supply. I'll post again after I investigate further.

I'm having the same problem, After one year nothing on the power cord. But my unit works normal when I run on batteries. Very frustrating when you call Altex and they have replacements. Not sure I’ll buy from them again.

Same problem, no power to the unit. The problem seems due to the connection between the power cord plug and the socket. Tried to open the unit, but the front cover was clued on from inside, very strange!

  • thomcat40 Jan 11, 2009

Are you referring to the Cord and power pak that comes with the unit, or are you talking about inside the unit? I tried my friends power cord and it still doesn't come on? Any suggestions?

  • larry1948 May 11, 2010

I bought the batteries and put them in - nothing. Got to doubt the problem is with the external power supply.

Has anyone figured out how to open the unit itself to see if any replaceable part is fried?

  • larry1948 May 11, 2010

Have any of you tried to use the unit with batteries to see if the issue is within the unit or in the power supply? Funny, I don't even have 8 "D" Cells in the house.

Altec no longer makes the power supply. However you can find used ones on eBay for about $25. I went to my local electronics store and bought an 18V, 2 amp power supply for $14. It works great and charges the iPod just like the OEM power supply. The store I purchased it from is JK Electronics in Westminster, CA 714-890-4001.

Mljrucla77 Is correct. I purchased the same from JK Electronics and had the same result. Thanks, without a replacement power supply I would need to buy a whole new unit.

Why is the electric power supply converted to 17volts, but if you use 8 D type batteries the power supply is 12 volts. How can there be such a big differance in power supply?

Hooking 5.1 computer speakers to a Samsung Plasma

Computer speakers are powered, they have their own amps inside the speaker cabinet.

To get these to work on a TV you need to plug them into a headphone out jack.

The external speaker terminals produce too hot a signal for powered computer speakers. The amp in the speakers may have already been damaged.

My philips dvd player 5.1 have female ports at back side for audio but i have the sound system of LG which has simple naked wire to connect .

Philips DVP 3256 has 6 outputs which takes in RCA connectors
Altec lansing VS3251 has 3 STEREO outputs.
Buy 3 nos of STEREO (female) to RCA (male) cables
1. Connect the Altec's green wire to first stereo-to-RCA cable. RCA ends to DVP 3256's Front left and Front right
2. Connect the Altec's black wire to second stereo-to-RCA cable. RCA ends to DVP 3256's Rear left and Rear right
3. Connect the Altec's orange wire to third stereo-to-RCA cable. RCA ends to DVP 3256's Centre/Sub woofer. Interchange RCA ends if the Subwoofer sounds dull.

Good Luck

Altec Lansing VS 4121

It is unlikely that this is a problem with your speakers more likely that it is a problem with the DVD player itself. I would recomend trying another DVD player.

thats sounds like feedback. try giving your sattelites spacings. if they are near to each other, try to put them far from each other.

try also to turn of your microphone. that might work.
