Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I had a Router connected to my PC back i June. The engineer who connected it turned off the Wifi becuase I didn't think my husband would be interested in learning computing. Now he's been given a laptop, old but perfectly servicable but because the Wifi's been turned off I can't add it to the original PC. I put the Router disk in PC because it said to do that but the 'add a PC' option didn't come up as it said it would. Is there an easy way of doing this please? Regards Val

Unplug the router for about 6 minutes. Don't just turn it off. Completely unplug it. Then plug it back in, with your computer on.

W7 CHECK ,a rare poster tells OS. thanks !
there is nothing at all simple about wifi , it's not like plugging in a toaster.
only this PC or CELL cant connect? do that first.
does Ethernet cable connect work?
what model linksys.?
you disabled encryption in PC or the router,? (do tell)

but wired mode is simple do that first.?
in fact wired lets you update your wireless drivers.!!
first see if the LT has a Ethernet jack on the side.
that be first. if this works all is good, with internet and is only WIFI issues...

Tests?

do other PC or CELLS wifi connect at home to that unstated router?

is it your linksys router or is it the ISP companies router, (matters)(if you cant log in to your router , it's not yours)
grab and CAT5/6 Ethernet cable RJ45 plugs on end.
connect, up, see the internet is not dead. if yes, call your ISP....
next:(Ill pretend the ethernet cable works perfectly)
is this ok>?
I will do just 1 step, of 10. until you respond.
most don't so...

GO TO CONTROL PANEL
START + CONTROL PANEL.
THEN PICK DEVICE MANAGER
SEE THIS? This is my wifi chip, yours will have a different name Wlan = wifi in most cases
there are 2 network chips one is Ethernet other Wlan is wifi, make sure the driver is not missing or bad.
if its bad, get the correct driver from HP, ask.!

Did you set a username and password for the router. If you did go to your computer and make sure your wifi is turned on. If they are turned on then go to the name of the router that said linksys and try to connect to the router using the username and password. If you didn't set a username and password then it should just connect. If you don't remember your username and password then on the back of the router there will be a reset button hold down for 1 min to be safe and start from the beginning but your wifi signal should be working without a password

My husband was given an old Dell laptop and it has a Lynksys Wireless Adapter card in the side, model WPC54G, and I am unable to connect it to my netgear router?

Does the laptop detect the WiFi of the netgear router ? If not, plug a PC to the router and access the interface to ensure that the SSID is not hidden.

If the WiFi is detected, the problem might be with the security key used. Again, in the interface, note down the security key, in the wireless section of the router. Then, when attempting to connect to the WiFi, enter the security key as noted (Capital letters if any, etc).

You might also try to configure the WiFi connection manually, without using the wizard.

Another issue might be conflicting software. If a software is installed by the manufacturer of the WiFi component, it may conflict with Windows' WiFi manager. You will have to indicate to either Windows or the software to NOT manage network connections, then use the other (i.e. if you tell Windows not to manage wireless networks, you will have to use the manufacturer's software)

there were some random wifi issues with ipads early on but the most recent updates through itunes have corrected those. So best thing would be to connect to your computer and make sure its updated. if that doesn't work, may be a range issue, they dont have the longest reception.

there is no highspeed wifi. but yes 3/4g.

dont you mean you have wifi router
to connect you MUST match it, not husbands CPU.
the router broadcasts a wifi SSID, name
you click that and match what the router wants.
such is WPA2
and a pass phrase.
if you old A1240 is set to wep only or is so old it cant do WPA/2
then it fails.
I have no idea what WIFI card is your old PC.
and that matters big time.

what is best is login to the router and read what it wants
them may your pC do that.
I warn you the most old wifi cards are useless.
buy a WPA2 card (or usb wifi dongle new)

NO OS stated by you is this the virus magnet XP?

it will not interfere with HUSbands computer.
it will move to unused channels, auto, if set that way as it should.

Wireless connection

Hi,

There are a few requirements other than the laptop and the wireless card. You need to also have an Wireless AP/Router that must be connected to the modem that connects to your ISP. All your PCs must then connect to this router either using the wired/Ethernet ports or WiFi.

If such a device (WiFi AP/Router) already exists and is connected to your modem and your other PC(s) are tied up to it and can access the Internet, you need to install the drivers (in a CD that came with the wireless card) to your IBM ThinkPad. Thereafter, you need to configure your laptop's wireless networking to access the AP/router. Your AP/Router must also be configured to accept wireless clients.

Please post back with brand/model of your AP/Router.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

IPAQ wireless connectivity

always start with the simplest answer first so make sure you have WiFi turned on. Think back, have you changed the wireless security on your router? If so you may need to re-enter the network details or add your iPAQ's MAC address to the access control list on the router. In the bottom right-hand corner of the home screen you should have a small HP Wireless symbol, if you tap it you should get your HP Wireless control panel on screen and can 1: turn WiFi on and off, 2: manually enter the WiFi network details and 3: search for WiFi networks in range.
