Question about Sony Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a VAIO Model PCG-8J1L laptop. It's approx 7 years old. I've recently replaced the battery. Now when I turn it on, nothing works except for the fan. No graphics (no glimmer of backlight), HD light doesn't show activity, etc.

Thank you. We tried the sytem recovery disk that came with the computer and was not able to access BIOS screen. Are files typcially recoverable from a failed HDD?

Hi,

I am afraid but it seems that the HDD has gone bad. The best way to conclude is to try booting it with a startup disk. See the article bellow to understand how to boot it from the disc. If it does not boot then there is a confirmation that the HDD has gone bad and there is no way but to replace it.

Thank You

If you are still under warranty good luck getting assistance from Sony support. I purchased a Sony VAIO VPCEB17FX/B for my wife in July 2010, the HDD died two months later and for the past month and a half we have been dealing with what I can only describe as the worst technical support on the face of the earth.

Sounds overly dramatic, I know, but this is my honest opinion. I have reached the point where I have no choice but to void my warranty and do the work myself. There is not enough space in this comment box to document the horror show we have been going around and around with but suffice to say that their support - or lack thereof - has actually made me embarrassed for them.

any 18-20 volt laptop charger should work only need correct power plug and that can be easily changed if necessary with soldering iron and volt meter. using old charger plug as replacement. volt meter is used to check out correct polarity of plug before and after you re solder plug on.generally outside is -ve and center is +ve ,alternatively go to ebay or google and type in Sony Vaio PCG 7Q1M charger,or type in part number ,or try 18-20v laptop charger, that is what I do when I need a replacement charger, cost around $10 delivered usually.

HAVE TRIED CHANGE THE CMOS BATTEWHAT CAN I DO NXTRY TO REMOVE BIOS PASSWORD BUT IT COUDNT WORK,?

Sony Vaio PCG and some Vaio VGN Series use the last 7 digits of the laptop serial number to calculate the bios master password. The serial number for a Sony Vaio is often located on the bottom of the laptop on a white sticker. The serial number may also be found by removing the battery and checking in the battery compartment. The link to unlockbiosrecovery.com below works on the following models:
PCG-C, PCG-F, PCG-GR, PCG-GRS, PCG-GRT, PCG-GRV, PCG-GRX, PCG-GRZ, PCG-N, PCG-NV205, PCG-QR, PCG-R, PCG-SR, PCG-SRX, PCG-TR, PCG-V, PCG-VX, PCG-X, PCG-Z, VGN-B, VGN-FS, VGN-S, VGN-T, VGN-TX1, VGN-X
I use http://www.unlockbiosrecovery.com/Unlock_Sony_Bios.php
For $20 they use the last 7 digits of the laptop serial number to calculate the bios master password and then email it to you in an hour. They guarantee it to work and you can call them if you have a question.

Ifthe laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be wornout. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cyclesand will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% andgradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up atall. ORThe battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected thebattery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. Ifthe battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to bereplaced.

PCG-K415B is the correct model number the label is possibly the service tage or something.

Here are the specifications of your laptop
  • Intel Celeron D Processor 345 3.06GHz / 533MHz FSB
  • 512MB DDR SDRAM - Low cost double memory Offer - call for details
  • 40GB Hard Drive
  • DVD Dual Layer Drive - To read DVDs and CDs and write CDs, DVD+, DVD- and large Dual Layer DVD
  • 15.4" XGA xblacklogo.jpg Widescreen TFT Screen
  • ATI Mobility Radeon 345M 64MB shared graphics

Sony Vaio

If you get the initial Sony screen, then this is a hard drive crash, and the drive will need to be replaced. If you do not get the initial screen, then it a failed motherboard component. Either way,, you have a hardware issue, and there's no simple fix. I hope your parents will be away for a while. If you need anything else, just ask, and good luck.

How can I adjust me laptop's brightness?

You really cannot adjust screen brightness through windows unless you have calibration software that uses a light detecting frame... I had a Sony Vaio PCG-something and Vista really screwed it up as well. Here's the Sony eSupport website where you can enter your model and reinstall some originals drivers for the computer that may restore functionality to your function keys:
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-download.pl?upd_id=2207&SMB=YES

Some things you can do to save battery power: turn of your wireless if you're not using it (there's usually a wifi switch on most laptops, turn it off), set your screen saver to come on as quickly as possible, run as few programs as possible and try to avoid graphic-intense programs.
