Question about GE Dishwashers

PDW8100 Dishwasher went through cycle several times, but I am unable to open the door. Is there a way to get it open? Thanks, Barbara

I'm not positive what model I have so I need to tell you how it works. To open it one must squeeze the 5 in long horizontal "handle" upwards. It is not the kind that stick out and is pushed sideways. It is flush with the machine. There is no place that I can see to use a screwdriver that I can see.

To describe the dishwasher it say sanitizer and clean at the top and is a Quiet Power 5. Does that help? It is three months old.

The closest I can tell from looking at the front of the manual is that my dishwasher is a GE Profile 8900. I don't know if that makes a difference for you. Sorry about the typos by the way. I have not had an answer that has been helpful. I am waiting to hear more. Thanks. Barbara

Hi,

When your dishwasher door has a problem, check these:

Latch
Springs
Hinges
Door seal
Latch The latch on many dishwashers is adjustable. If your door is easy to close but difficult to latch, adjust the latch to let the door close more easily. If you can't see any way to adjust the latch, yours may be fixed in a certain position. Check for other reasons for the latching problem.

If the latch has worn out in a way that makes it impossible for you to close the door properly, you probably need to replace the latch.

Springs Your dishwasher has two springs that counterbalance the weight of the door. If either or both of these are broken, the door feels quite heavy and you need to replace both springs.

Hinges The hinges are important to the door closing properly. If they're bent or deformed, you probably need to replace them. Once bent, only rarely can they be straightened well enough.

Door seal If your dishwasher is new--or if you have just replaced a door seal--the door may be difficult to latch for a week or two. If the tightness persists, though, try adjusting the latch, if it's adjustable. If it's not adjustable, there's probably nothing you can do immediately. But try running the dishwasher on the highest heat cycle to help the seal conform to the door. Otherwise, the seal should compress over time.

Goodluck..

If you need it open in a hurry, take a screwdriver and pry the handle off and then you should be able to get to the mechanism and use the screwdriver like your handle and use it to open the dishwasher door. Depending on the problem, most likely the handle broke since it is the weakest part, you will need to replace it and possibly even more of the inner parts. Let me know if you have any questions while doing this.

good luck

yes, I am saying that you should just break this plastic handle as a small piece of plastic probably broke off of it which usually happens and it will need to be replaced anyway. Then you can use the screwdriver to move the metal latch in order to open the door. These plastic handles tend to break pretty easily so it is probably the only thing wrong. Let me know if you still don't understand what I'm saying.

from your description can be several causes of that, one of them is motherboard fault, another will be actuator and third can be mechanical fault within lock or with hinge... make your pick...

It may just be that the little door that holds the detergent didn't open when it was time to do so. Clean the latch and try it several times. It may never occur again.

Hello bckp,
Welcome to Fixya

If your dishwasher does not run or stops during a cycle

Is the Start/Resume indicator flashing? Opening the door or
interrupting the power stopped the cycle. Close the door and
press START/RESUME.
Does the Start/Resume indicator flash 3 times when you
press START/RESUME? The dishwasher is waiting for you to
open the door after the last cycle. Open and close the door,
then press START/RESUME.
Is the door closed tightly and latched?
(NOTE: On models with a dual-digit display, the control
displays “- -” during a cycle if it believes the door is not
latched.)
Is the right cycle selected? Refer to the “Cycle Selection
Charts.”
Is there power to the dishwasher? Has a household fuse
blown, or has a circuit breaker tripped?
Has the motor stopped due to an overload? The motor
automatically resets itself within a few minutes. If it does not
restart, call for service.
Is the water shutoff valve (if installed) turned on?
It is normal for certain cycles to repeatedly pause for several
seconds during the main wash.

If the dishwasher will not fill

Check the overfill protection float that is able to move up and down
freely? Press down to release.

Let me know if any of these procedures helped you?
