> is getting heated

Normal for any spinning device.

> sometime creating noise

Normal when the R/W mechanism moves (like the arm on a DJ's turntable) to read from "random" locations on the disk-drive. In general, "defragmenting" a disk-drive tends to reduce the noise, because the R/W mechanism moves less distance.

> not detected ... when tried several times ... 20 GB

Any 20 GB disk-drive is "out-of-warranty" -- like a bald car-tire, it should have been replaced before it totally "blew".

Does it actually get detected, after a few attempts? If so, then "backup" your files (write to CD/DVD recordable media, or write to USB memory-stick) before it totally "dies". Then, buy a new disk-drive, install Windows onto it, and then reconnect the "old" disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive.
Copy all your files from the "old" disk to the "new" disk.

Hii, When I plugg in my western Digital Hard disk it sometime get detectable and sometimes not and it is sounding like Tic tic. Could you help me how to resolve this problem.

hi

This is because the hard disk is not getting the sufficient power from the USB port. Try connecting your hard dik on other PC and repeat he steps three four times and see the behaviour.

Besides your hard disk is fine !!!

My Western Digital Passport 80GB Hard Drive is no longer detected when I plug it in. The power light is on, the drive is running but it is not detected on either of my computers running Windows...

Any external disk-drive as small as 80GB is probably "out-of-warranty" -- it's likely that the disk-drive inside the enclosure has "died".

You have two options, not mutually exclusive:
* exercise the Western Digital "Customer Loyalty" program -- find the serial-number of your Passport, and access WD's web-site to buy a new Passport, citing the old serial-number to qualify for a significant discount on your purchase;
* open the enclosure, disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and connect it to the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, to "frankenstein" it, creating a "new" external storage-device.

Windows cannot recognize my western digital external hard drive. I am getting an error msg: "Windows cannot recognize this device". I need to retrieve my files! Help!

The device has suffered a major failure. If you're lucky it's in the electronics of the case so take it apart, extract the hard disk inside, put it in another external case (or directly inside a desktop) and access it this way. If even then the disk isn't recognized then the hard disk itself has died and all the data on it is lost.

Open the external hard drive cover, remove the hard disk inside, and fix it back. Try again and let's see what happens.

If it still does not work, insert the external drive into the computer, feel the hard drive if it spins/vibrate from inside or if it makes a cracking noise.

If it spins/vibrate, it means the hard disk is still working. In that case, you have to get another external drive case/cover.

But if it makes cracking noise, then it means the hard drive is damaged and you need to get another one.
Best regards

Hard disk not detected sometimes

I can think of 3 possible causes to your problem:

1. Faulty cable - try replacing the cable by borrowing a working cable from a friend. If this solves the problem then you need to buy a new cable

2. Lack of power - some USB drives especially those for high capacity drives require extra power aside from that provided by USB. If you do not have a separate power leading to your drive, check if there is a separate power slot and run a cable from it to your outlet/USB slot. Just make sure that the voltage levels are correct.

3. USB Slot - some laptops' USB slots do not produce power enough to drive a hard disk. Other devices may work (e.g. keyboards, mouse) but not hard drives. Try to use another slot in your laptop. If this works, remember to use the same slot next time.

Hope this helps.

What to do if the disk is not detected?

Hi ctieprabanda,

Check your bios, to see if it detects it there? If not switch the sata cables and try. If that doesn't work , then you have a dead drive.

Good Luck,

Western Digital My Book Pro - Replace Disks

Same problem. This from WD Answer ID 1664:
Important: The user serviceable enclosure will only work with replacement hard drives from Western Digital. Inserting a non-Western Digital hard drive into the enclosure could cause damage or data loss.
So Hitachi drives will not work at all. After talking to tech support, it seems you have to have them send you a replacement disk in order for it to work.
I'm looking for a way around this since I want to upgrade my dual 500 G drives with dual 1 TB drives also. Maybe they throw something onto the boot sector that tells the MyBook controller what to do, who knows? The search goes on.
