Does not heat.

After accidentally running the microwave for a short while with nothing inside now it will not heat up but it will run. What do you think is the problem and is this worth while to fix?

This is likely a bad magnetron. When an oven is run empty, the waves reflect back to the magnetron, damaging it.

If you or someone you know wants to look into this, we have critical safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

NOTE: There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

We're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Why won't it heat?

there could be a few reasons for this , like example if you accidentally left stirring spoon inside it and turned it back on, the microwave generator (magnetron) has been damaged, or if you heated a few items up one after another , it has a overheat switch inside it that's tripped , or could be a door safety switch that's went bad due to a loose door panel or something , unfortunately id refer this to a qualified repair center , there's really nothing a home owner can do inside there except get badly hurt on high voltages inside these things (even unplugged), but always get a cost not to exceed agreement from them b4 they start after all you don't want to spend 100 on a 60 dollar microwave

Why microwave won't stop running unless door is open ?

Is it actually heating or just making noise and acting like it's heating? (put a cup of water inside and close the door.) IF it's actually heating, then you have a shorted relay on the main control board, and you will have to replace the board. IF it's just making noise like it's working, but it's not heating, then the problem is 1 of the door switches is not working right (it's either stuck open or stuck closed).

Microwave wont heat up food

If your microwave runs, but doesn'theat your food, verify that you have selected a cooking setting. You mayaccidentally set the timer. Test the magnetron by placing 1 cup of water in themicrowave and heating the water for three minutes. If the water doesn't heat, your magnetron is dead.

Can you run a microwave with nothing in it? Someone told me that just putting a sponge in it will ruin the microwave.

hi, running it with nothing in it will cause it no harm, the only object that will cause it any harm is if you place anything metalic inside it whilst it is switched on.

to clean a microwave most people place a bowl of clean water inside and put the microwave on high for 5 to 10 min doing this breaks up any grime stuck inside the microwave making it easier to wipe off, you can also put a wet cloth in a bowl and switch it on doing this does the same as a bowl of water.

so the only thing that can cause damage is anything with metal in it this will cause it to short out.

hope that has been some help to you

Made a popping sound. Runs but doesn't heat

Remove the outer cover and look for a blown fuse. Change the high voltage diode (pull the power plug first) and the 'stirrer' (a fan-like device located inside the sheet metal waveguide near the port where the microwave energy enters the cooking cavity). It's plastic bearing will arc-over causing a short circuit on the microwave energy.

Microwave popped and now does not heat

Okay, first we need to separate the situations. You were boiling water on the stove and had the range hood fan running to **** up the steam. Then you put something in the microwave to heat and you heard a pop and then zip-o.

The water on the stove has nothing to do with the situation, the fan you turn on is not part of the microwave, so it has nothing to do with the microwave.

The pop you heard and then the humming suggests the magnetron failed. You said you found a blow fuse and replaced it and still nothing, right? The magnetron is the most likely culprit...I would think it is safe to say that the magnetron shorted and drew enough current to blow the fuse.

Replace the magnetron and if that doesn't work, let me know here. Good Luck!

When starting microwave it does not heat

Make sure the power outlet is good--try a working lamp in it. Is there a reset button in back of the unit? If still nothing, open the case and look for a blown fuse. If you find it blown, then probable causes are a shorted high voltage diode in the power supply for the magnetron or a shorted stirrer (a metal fan-like device located within the metal waveguide near where the microwave energy enters the cooking cavity) plastic bearing that has arced internally which shorts out the energy. Replace the diode, stirrer, and fuse. Test the unit with a cup of water inside the cavity (leave the case off, but keep your hands away when running)

Microwave will not heat

Q - The microwave makes a loud "hum or buzz" noise but will not heat up the food?
A - 9 times out of 10 this is usually this is a bad magnetron, the other time is sometimes a bad high voltage diode. See components section.
Q - My microwave is running and sounds like it is working but will not heat up anything.
A - Many thing can do this but, common things are....loose high voltage wire.....poor solder joint on board.....magnetron.....power relay.....
Q - The microwave display counts down and the inside light is on,  but nothing is heating and the fan is not running.
A - This most commonly is a bad door switch, other possible problems are a faulty relay or solder joint on the power module, but a bad door switch is most common.
Q - The fan in my microwave oven is not running will this hurt my microwave?
A - YES, the fan cools the magnetron and electronics, take the microwave in for service, most fans are not too expensive to replace.
Q - My microwave blows the fuse inside itself as soon as I push the start button.
A - Usually a shorted high voltage capacitor...see components section.

Q - My microwave went dead when I opened the door ( same problem as closed the door ).
A - This often is a stuck or faulty door switch and it has blown the interior microwave fuse.

Q - My microwave is completely dead.
A - House fuse has blown or interior fuse inside the microwave has blown ( usually a part inside the microwave makes this fuse blow ) Sometimes a bad fuse holder inside the microwave cannot hold the fuse tight enough and the fuse will blow as well.
