An external data-storage device has a few parts:
* a USB cable
* an enclosure
* a disk-drive, exactly as used inside a desktop or a laptop
* a USB-to-disk-drive adapter

So, if you open the enclosure, you can see an "internal" disk-drive.
You could even disconnect the disk-drive, and then connect a much-larger disk-drive,
in order to increase the capacity of the device (and to replace an out-of-warranty disk-drive
by a new in-warranty disk-drive).

It's really quite a simple fix... Simply disassemble the drive casing, and remove the hard drive itself, it's actually quite simple. Then install the hard drive into another, replacement external case - they are available at electronics retailers, computer stores, The best deals are found online at locations such as Amazon, eBay, or

Try to copy something else to it, if that does not work you have something wrong with the computer or drive. If so rip to your hard drive then move over to the external drive.

How do I use this product? I'm trying to store a software on it.

What do you mean? Install software on it? Or save files to it? External drives are primarily for storage purposes, and not for installation purposes.

If you are looking to install something on it, then you have it for the wrong reasons. It's main purpose is to store files.

How do you go about retrieving info off your hard, my local computer store was unable to do this for me.

You can pay to have it done ofcourse.$$$$$
You can take the Hard Drive out and use an external usb connector and connect it to another PC and get the info that way....thats the easiest, Or you can use a linux based live CD such as Knoppix to retrieve it and bur it to disk or save it to an external hard drive.

Hope that helps.

do you have 2 hard drives or a partitioned hard drive? anyhow go to my computer check and see if the drive is listed. If not you may have to reinstall it. If the drive has become defective there are readers that can transfer your info. You also can take it to Geek Squad or other service and they can transfer your info to a new external drive ( i suggest an external TB drive you can get the for $150 and they are well worth it) for music purposes and archiving. Portability alone makes it a great choice.

Hard Drive requires lots of power to load. If you have purchased only the IDE cable to connect it to USB port, USB port will be unable to initialize the Hard Drive.
To make it work,you require an external casing for IDE Hard Drives with external power support. Like this one --

If you already have this casing with external power support, please let me know.
