Hi...well first of all can you boot into safe mode?...what kind of free program did you download (if i know that one we can probably reverse the damage). What operating system are you using?....the answers to these will determine how to proceed.....
if it is XP, you may be able to boot into safe mode, do a system restore, and then go about getting rid of the virus...let us know..

ok...well, first off, see if you can boot into safe mode...do that by pressing the F8 button while the initial boot up goes on (on some machines it is F2)
If you can access the boot option menu that follows, boot into SAFE mode, let the system load, then go to start-all programs-accessories-system tools- system restore.
In system restore you'll find a check box that says restore my computer to an earlier time. check that, go on to the next screen where you can choose a restore point from before the avast install.
Restore to that point, then we can deal with the anti-virus issue.
write back and let me know what happens!!!, and we can go from there!

When I turned on my computer this morning I got this message saying your computer might be infected with: Sality.AN. Then message asking me to buy this antivirus called Defender pro 2015.

You almost NEVER have to completely format a hard drive to remove a virus.

If you can get into safe mode run a system restore to before the infection, if you can't boot into safe mode then you'll need to get on another computer that can access the internet and download HITMANPRO. Their site explains how to make a USB stick with KICKSTARTER so you can boot from that and it will allow you to remove the bug(s)

Hope that helps.

Tip

Secure Your Windows PC For Free

With the online holiday buying season upon us, the most important thing to remember is computer security. Each day millions of threats cycle through the Internet, most of which harm computers and home networks. These threats hunt for credit card numbers, social security numbers, and other personal information and can be used against you in the form of identity theft. Here are some tips to help secure your PC and keep your information safe and locked down.

1. Windows Update
This is the number one reason computers fall victim to malicious threats (viruses, spyware, etc.) is not updating the Windows operating system. During the spring of 2009, the virus named "conficker" targeted computers that were not fully updated. To update the Windows, first the computer needs to be connected to the Internet, whether it would be wired or wireless network connection. Then go to Start > Programs > Windows Update. Let Widows Update complete and afterward your computer will be up-to-date.

2. Anti-Virus Program
Some sort of anti-virus software should be the bare minimum for computer security. Not having protection can increase the chances of viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, and identity theft. There are some free as well as paid versions, but for basic web surfing and email free versions will work just fine. Here are some recommended free anti-virus programs.
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
Avira Anti-Vir
Avast Home Edition
Microsoft Security Essentials

3. Firewall
A firewall blocks incoming web traffic not requested by the computer user. Firewalls can prevent malware from entering the computer thus fewer viruses and spyware. A great, free firewall program called Comodo can protect your PC and the user can select various security levels for added protection.

4. Windows Defender
Windows Defender is spyware program from Microsoft that is built in to Windows Vista and Windows 7 and as a download for Windows XP, which can be found here. Defender offers protection from spyware, pop-ups, and slow performance. To access Windows Defender, go to Start > Programs > Windows Defender then click the scan button at the top of the window and then remove the threats when complete. Windows Defender is a simple solution to increase computer performance.

5. Encryption
Encryption continues to be a major issue in protecting computer data if it fell into the wrong hands. Many users have huge amounts of information about themselves on their computer including pictures, internet history, email messages, contacts, login usernames and passwords, and much much more. What encryption does is locks the files with a series of numbers and letters making impossible to decode or read for that matter. But the user can read the files with a key and a password which unlocks the files that were encrypted. I recommend using TrueCrypt for encrypting files and works with all versions of Windows.

As for all security software, plan on allowing, at minimum, running all the security programs (anti-virus, firewall, Defender, and more) each week to make sure the computer is protected. It's very easy to secure computers and with a few clicks you even can make it automatic.

If questions arise or need assistance installing or running any of the programs mention above, please feel free to contact me. I will be happy to assist you in any way.

I M WORRIED ABOUT VIRUS. WHAT CAN I DO NOW?

If you are worried about viruses affecting your computer, I suggest you install an anti-virus program on your computer. There are commercial anti-virus programs such as Nortons and McAfee.
There are also freeware anti-virus programs on the Internet, AVG is a good program. Generally commercial programs offer better protection.
AVG also offers a commercial version of their freeware anti-virus program.

My Mcafee anti-virus is about to finish, how do I install Advast free,do I download advast then uninstall/delete Mcafee then install advast free with Reg key. Thanx in advance !!!

Multiple anti-virus programs on a computer conflict with each other, as well as installation may fail when trying to install one Anti-virus program when another one is still on the computer.

Download Avast
Disable your internet connection, or unplug the ethernet cable
Uninstall McAfee
Install Avast
Hook your internet back up
Use your reg key and update Avast.

You just don't want an unsecured computer with an active internet connection even during the short period of time between uninstalling the old one and installing the new one
