Use the longest stitch length and loosen top tension,. Practice on a piece of scrap material until you are satisfied with the results. Good luck

Singer 29k71 stitch length on the longest still not enough about 2 mm..! What can be done..!?

If that is the maximum stitch length and you do not have a basting stitch, then you can't make a larger stitch. You could try free motion stitching where you drop the feed dogs, use a darning foot and manually move the fabric, but getting the stitches even would be quite difficult.

How to baste?

Basting is simply using a long stitch that can be pulled out after you put the main stitch in. It holds fabric in the right place till it is sewn.

Just bought a singer 8280 and as a first time sewer find it great. Can I get a ruffler foot for it and are they a universal fit or do I need a particular one?

Usually universal, just be sure that it is a low shank because that is what your machine looks like to me. I looked up your manual online at and here is a little bit of advice. Go there and download a copy to your computer. That way, you will always have a copy when you need it. You can make ruffles by using your machine stitch length, just make it the longest stitch, loosen your top tension, then pull on the bottom thread. Or you can do a basting stitch by hand and pull the thread and distribute evenly, then machine stitch to lock it down. I haven't used a ruffler in years. Try it first and see if you like that idea before you invest in a ruffler. They can be pricey, try ebay for a used one but be sure that it is a low shank . I am also sure that Singer sells them too, 1-800-4singer. Good luck and happy sewing.

What are the settings for "basting?"

Hi. Basting is done with a straight stitch set to the longest stitch length possible on your machine.
