Please follow the diagnosis outlined in this article to check whether the backlight lamp or the inverter board are the root cause of the problem or not:

If you connect the external monitor & nothing is displayed on it, then this means that both the backlight lamp & the inverter board are fine. The main indicators in these cases are the sound, and the hard drive LED on the laptop case. If the laptop sounds just like it always does for a minute or two after being turned on, it means it's going ahead and booting the operating system, but the video processor or part of the motherboard circuit for video output has failed. If the laptop just sits there and beeps when you turn it on, or if you hear the fan but not the hard drive chuckling with its active LED flashing away, it means the laptop isn't getting as far as trying to boot the operating system. While this could be due to any number of hardware problems, the most common and easiest to
troubleshoot or repair is RAM failure. If your laptop has two RAM modules installed, try booting with just one and then the other in the primary slot. If your laptop only has one RAM module, you might consider buying one online from a site with a good memory selector, like

Tried external display and memory module swapping. Nothing worked. Any more ideas?

This would mean that we have a bad motherboard here. We need to find a replacement motherboard, fully disassemble the laptop, swap the motherboards,

That is it I'm afraid. The flash was unsuccessful. If you had an antivirus program loaded that will be why it failed. You can purchase pre loaded BIOS chipr on flea bay. All you need to do is find an engineer with SMD knowledge and replace it.

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow myinstructions to identify the fault and possible fix :-

My HP Pavilion dv5 1125nr laptop won't boot up. The screen never lights up when the power is turned on, the little hard drive light next to the power light doesn't flash at all (normally it flashes...

check by removing the battery then put it back again power it on, or without battery power it on directly then check, if still the same problem, the fault is in the motherboard of the laptop, better take it the service center or consult some technician in your area

Hi I have started my HP PAvilion dv9310us notebook all the keyboard lights are on but nothing is displayed on the screen it seems the notebook is turned off but it is on and running.

lights are on but nobody is home.
This is a problem seen in a couple of HP model lines (dv, and tx).
Short version...
Your motherboard is shot, I hope you are still under warranty as HP hasn't owned up to the design flaw that causes the problem enough to do a recall or offer replacement.

IF you have critical files that you need to get from the machine you may try the following, however this is not a long term solution...

1) turn pc on (lights are on fans are running, no hp spalsh screen, no nothing)
2) put pc in a bag (what ever you would carry your laptop around in should work, or wrap in a towel, the point is that it gets really hot)
3) wait 20-30 min.
4) turn pc completely off (hold power button for several sec or unplug and remove battery)
5) try rebooting (you may have to try a couple times, and I have a superstition that holding down F10 while powering on helps, once you see the HP splash you should be good to go)
6) Remember that HP makes devices with all kinds of cool features, but they almost always fail shortly after the end of thier warranty.

All you have to do is to access the BIOS then set the option of first boot device as CD then the second boot device as HDD or hard disk. When you turn on your HP you should see the option to go to the BIOS Setup sometimes its F2 or F12 or Del Depending on the type of motherboard you have on your laptop. Once you set it to boot from CD , when you startup your computer you should see press any key to boot from CD just press any key and it will boot. After the installation change back the first boot device.

If you have any other questions do message me back.
