What free software can be used to improve the sluggish performance of the Dell Inspiron 6000?

A slow computer could becaused by a number of things -1. InsufficientRAM memory - if your computer has less than 512Mb of RAM then increase it to atleast 1Gb of RAM.2. Registryproblems - clean and repair the registry, it will contain unused registry keys.Use programs such as Registry Mechanic, Microsoft RegClean etc.3. Uninstall/removeunused programs, this will also free up hard disk space.4. Notenough hard disk space - swap file space may need to be increased if Windows hasn'tbeen configured to manage it.5. Installlatest Windows updates.6. Updatevirus definition files and scan computer for viruses, Trojans, malware etc.7. Clearthe Internet cache for faster browsing.8. Harddisk maintenance is required at least once a month to keep it functioningefficiently.Runthe following programs - Disk Cleanup -removes temporary files that are no longer used and to recovers hard diskspace.DiskDefragmenter to make fragmented files into contiguous files and thereforethe hard disk access is faster.

Replace laptop hard drive or replace laptop. Current 80 GB Toshiba?

It depends on what you run on this laptop ..but if you only run windows xp ..you do not need a larger hard drive ..and if you only need space to store data ..you can just get a usb external hard drive and avoid the trouble ..The hard drive will be fully usable in other computers too and this is the advantage if you will upgrade in the future to another one with high performances ..
If you have at least a 1.6 cpu on it ..and 1 G of ram memory and you think you may run windows 7 ..you can upgrade it to a larger hard disk ..but remember that this one runs on ata ..and I'm not sure it worth the trouble .
If you have at least 1 G of ram memory on it you can run windows 7 with this hard disk too ..but you will probably have to change the partitions configurations and make C drive at least 40 G so to have space to run it proper..
let me know if you have other thoughts related with this matter ..and i will answer it ..Please rate my answer to help my activity here ..thank you ..!

HI,
chances are that you simply do not have the resources to run windows 7. These are the basic (recommended minimum), for windows 7

  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit).
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit).
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
  • 1 more GB of RAM & 15 GB more HDD space to run 7 in XP Mode.

These are the typical resources that come with your machine.

D510HI

  • Processor Pentium M 1.73 GHz
  • Ram Installed Size 512.0 MB
  • Technology DDR2 SDRAM
  • Hard Drive 40.0 GB

  • OS Provided Microsoft Windows XP Professional
It would probably be advisable to go back to XP
Good luck

Not enough sdram, everything very slow loading what to do to add more ddr sdram?

1. This may not be extra ram being needed
this may be a virus or you have loaded your hard drive and will need to clear some files and programs may be needing a lot of space.
2. You may have to many Mp3 file stored or videos. Videos and music Mp3 files take up a lot of space on the hard drive and can potentially lock the hard drive.
3.You the utility in Windows to clear some hard drive space. Found in the "accessories" then System Tools >.then "disk cleanup" This is for Windows XP.
Windows 7 is totally different but basically the same principal.
I hope this helps. Have a great day

Computer with not enought resources

You might need to increase the Virtual Memory (which is hard disk space that is used when the RAM is full).
I know of an article on how to increase the virtual memory in XP, but Vista and Windows 7 are not that different.
