Picture fades to black then returns to normal for a few seconds then fades to black for two or three seconds. Power then turns off on its own and can only be turned back on after one to two minutes.

Back - light problem. Check and replace damaged component/s at its back-light inverter board, or replace this board as card basis. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. It will be best to replace the inverter board as card basis. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
To some model sets; especially LED back-lighted types; the back-light inverter circuit will be part of the main power supply board [SMPS]. In such cases, the power supply board might need replacement.
Thats a deflection problem which is causing the CRTs to shut down during deflection loss. The deflection board will need replacement. You can get replacement deflection boards from www.tvrepairworld.com
Is the standby light blinking? If so how many times? It could help narrow down where the problem is. At this point it could be anywhere. Most likely in the high voltage section. Get me more info and I will try to help.
Check the software and if is is not BX23U-1.5.0.0_03531 upgrade it by downloading the software from www.p4c.philips.com onto a USB stick. If that don't fix the issue change the small signalbaord.

Is the sound ok. Yust the Picture. If both dissapear replace power supply board. That is the main big board with the most heatsinks on it. Main power gos from a switch board to main power supply.
It seems your set has a loose conection in the high voltage circuits,in fact by now it should have many loose conections in different areas like the power supply and the horizontal deflection circuits,if you are familiar with tv service you can use the information as the first step to take, some of the loose conections are hard to see even for the trained technician but the one giving you this problem should not be hard to see,if you are not too familiar with tv service be safe and call for assistance from a servicer a least for an estimate.
do you get sound while screen does black? what do you mean by "until eventually it has turned black and will not come back"? is it black from the minute you turn the tv on untill you turn it off? if sound is good but picture is black, it may be the resault of a fried monitor tube, in this case replacement will cost alot.
if sound is dead also, them it is probobly power supply related issue. get out your DMM and measure the voltages in the power supply. When the screen goes black, is there still regulated B+ going to the circuitry? Do you still have HV? Is the filament of the CRT lit? Does the set still have a raster (you may have temporarily increase the screen setting to see it)? Do you measure any of the flyback derived B+ voltages that go to the video processing, tuner, Vertical Deflection, and other circuitry?
