The fridge part is too cold causing the food to freeze and the temperature knob not working... out of warranty

sounds like a defrost timer or defrost thermostat issue u can check with a multimeter, the timer can be checked with a sml flat head screw driver inserted in the tiny slot at center and turn slowly till u hear it click once not twice, u will then turn on the defrost timer. this will give another 10 -15 days before it will be all froze up agin. if the defrost timer does not come on after trying this then u may have a bad defrost thermostat, of course u also want to check the cold control knob and the cold control vents are working properly

I have a Hotpoint Fridge Freezer Model RFA52P. Its a recondition one which I have had for over a year and has been working fine up until last week. For some reason it is now switching off every few hours...

Temperature gauge or thermostat? If a thump gets it going then the electronics are a problem, get a new control board. If your thumping the thermostat it could be the defrost timer behind there, the timer motors get weak and won't go out of defrost, the thump gives it the umphh to move. Check with your local appliance parts supplier they can supply you with the proper replacement and they can show you a diagram to determine whether you need a control board or defrost timer.

Defrost Timer

Probably a control Board problem. Without model #, I can't say for sure, but your fridge probably has a defrost board and not a timer.

Yes, the air diffuser has to open to allow the cold air from the freezer to be blown into the fridge.

Freezer blowing cool air, but not freezing.

Hello there:
first make sure that the back of the unit is clear of any dirt or obstructions
also make sure that the food is not stacked up so high that the air cannot circulate also you may want to check the temperature setting if the unit does not respond to a lower setting your refrigerant level may be low or than you will have to have the temperature controle thermistor serviced or replaced

I have to keep the temperature turned up to 9 in order to keep the food at 45 degrees. The fridge is only 3 years old.

If it's the freezer control you keep at 9, it's probably a defrost problem. If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

If it's the fridge temp control you're talking about The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp ..

Where is the defrosting clock on my ZI 920/8ff (PCM 925771669) (type B257726)fridge freezer. I've checked out the defrosting heater and its ok. I need to find out where the defrosting clock is located...

The defrost timers are sometimes located in the same area as the temperature controls. A cover in this area will have a round hole giving access to the clutch head screw used to actuate the timer cycle. These timers are not field serviceable and are a replacement part. The cover over the control section should be removable to access the timer for replacement.

The fridge has power. But the temperature control has no power. I have a G.E. side by side. model # gss25tgpa

Check the defrost timer. It may be stuck in the defrost position which would give you no power to the temperature control. Locate the timer and rotate the clutch head screw clockwise and you should hear a click after which the compressor will start and there will be power to the thermostat.
