The laptop is frozen in hibernation mode. It won't turn off and nothing happens when clicking the mouse.

When they behave you can just push a key on the keyboard. The space bar is safe as it won't type anything. Just give it a tap or or two and see if it wakes up. When they get grumpy you may have to push the power button. If it works it goes through a very quick start up and you will see your screen and desktop as you left it. When it doesn't it just starts up normally and the hibernation save point is lost. As long as it didn't go into hibernation without saving something its not a big issue.

I've found that hibernation works ok on some models (and versions of windows) better than others. It either won't restart as expected or it may loose settings on a devices. As an example my sound wouldn't work again until I rebooted. Personally I try not to use hibernation for these reasons. A good reboot cleans out cache files and resets temporary files and so on. You may find that when you close the lid it goes into hibernation. You can set it under your power settings to do nothing. That way you can close it walk away and come back and its still running normally. The display just shuts off and relights when you open it.

This is just one of the joys of laptop ownership figuring out what saves you time and what is just annoying. ;-]

Thanks, this knowledge will be helpful whenever I get it to wake up! Do you think I should take the battery out and put it back in again?

There are a few levels of making it behave. One is the three finger salute or CTRL-ALT-DEL which should at least bring up the task manager and if you repeat should force a reboot. If that doesn't work then then you can just press and hold the power button down. That more or less replaces the reset button you would have used to reset on a desktop. And if those won't make it play nice then pulling the battery will do the job. You should try those in about that order. None will hurt the laptop but you can loose settings or unsaved stuff.

If it keeps locking up on you then you need to look into what is causing it. Usually you can start looking at the last program you installed or the one that consistently causes the lock-ups. Then you need to look at updates or settings and last it can be something like ram or over heating. some things don't work well with the hibernate and will corrupt and do this. Before you do too much just shut down and reboot a few times. And see if that starts it behaving. if it does then it was just the hibernate.

My laptop keeps saying hibernating and i cannot get to menu screen.

Definition: Hibernate is another option for powering down your laptop. When you use Hibernate all data will be saved to the hard drive in a compressed form. Once you start up from Hibernate mode you will be able to work with the applications and documents you left open before putting the laptop into Hibernate.
Hibernate is best used to conserve laptop battery power when you will be away from the laptop for more than a few minutes. You can put your laptop into Hibernate overnight or when you will be away from it for a few hours. Examples: Rather than shutting down my laptop each night, I use Hibernate to help conserve battery power and enable me to access my open files quicker in the morning.

If you are not going to use your computer for a few hours, it is a good idea to put it to sleep (also known as mode) to save power. If you are not going to use the computer for more than a day, it is usually best to turn it off.

hope it helps.... please rate if you like my post...thanks

Common problem with a lot of laptops.
I recommend you shut it down as opposed to let it hibernate or just turn off hibernation

Start... Control panel.... Power options... Hibernate ... uncheck the box "Enable Hibernate"

Hibernation file corrupt or missing on bootup how do I delete this message

Try disabling the hibernation feature, rebooting your laptop, then re-enabling the hibernation feature. This will delete the hibernation file.
Next time you hibernate your system, the hibernation file will be recreated.

Navigate to a web page watch video - laptop switches off after 3 mins - stays on for hours otherwise

Sounds like the laptop is going into hibernation. Have a look at power management to check on what hibernation is set to.If you are watching streaming video then the cpu etc are not doing anything, only your graphics chip is working and as the graphics chip is not polled by the power management system, it thinks you have left the laptop and hibernates it !! Increase the delay for hibernation or turn hibernation off. Just remember to close the screen when you leave the system unattended as this will also initiate hibernation..

Hibernation is a power management feature. When you hibernate a laptop, you're essentially turning it off. So, unlike Stand By (Sleep) mode, a hibernated laptop isn't using any battery power at all - that laptop is off!

The secret behind hibernation is that before you turn off the laptop, everything you're doing with the computer is saved. (The contents of memory are saved to the hard disk.) When the computer is turned on again, it recovers from hibernating by reloading all the saved information and restoring your laptop to exactly the same condition it was in before it was hibernated.

Briefly, hibernation works like this:

1. You activate the hibernation feature.

Hibernation is activated differently depending on how it's set up.

2. The laptop hums as everything in memory is saved to disk.

3. The laptop turns itself off.

It's really and truly off: The battery isn't being used, and it's safe to store the laptop or put it away until you need to use it again.

To recover from Hibernation mode, just turn the laptop on. In some cases, the laptop may recover from hibernation when you press a key or touch the mouse pad. hibernated state for as long as you want.

Hibernation mode requires hard drive space. So you should be aware that when hard drive space runs low, it's possible that Hibernation mode won't work.

In Windows XP, you have to activate Hibernation mode before you can use it. Follow these steps to activate Hibernation:

1. Click the Start button.

2. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.

3. Open the Power Options icon in the Control Panel.

4. In the Power Options Properties dialog box, look for and click on the Hibernation tab.

If you don't see a Hibernation tab, there's your answer: The laptop isn't capable of hibernating. Oh, well.

You might want to check the laptop's Setup program to see whether you can activate Hibernation there.

5. Select the Enable Hibernation option by clicking the check box to place a check mark in the box.

6. Review other options, if they're available.

7. Click OK to confirm the changes and close the Power Options Properties dialog box.

Optionally, close the Control Panel window, as well.

Some laptops may require you to restart Windows for this change to take effect.

My laptop wont hibernate!

Typically this indicates a problem with a particular piece of hardware or its driver that is not cooperating when windows tries to hibernate. Do you have anything new attached to the system? If so, try unplugging it, rebooting, and see if it cooperates then. Also, have you checked the windows event log to see if windows reports any particular errors when trying to hibernate?
