According to you security settings of your modem is difficult for you.

But you don't have say the OS you are using there. It depend on modem and OS. while installing the driver supported your OS select the PPPoa/PPPoE. After installing go to the web explorer and type the link (IP add) of your modem at the address bar and enter in the modem settings. Your modem vendor will provide this IP or see the manual.

Then go to the security settings and set it pasword protected. Enable the NAT (Network Address Translation)with your Private IP address for security. You can follow the manual to set it properly

For that you need to enable DHCP on router.Then your computer get ip address automatic from router.Connect your router to computer with ethernet cable then you can access it with following default link. http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.15.1 or http://192.168.2.1 If you are not able to access it with above ip then check your computers ip address gateway ip is your router ip try with it. Then it ask for user name and password. Type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or "password" or blank. Then you can see configuration page of router. use the following address:

then restart your pc
then try if you can open now

You have to set different ip address. To clear this up this how I got my setup. I have verizon internet. I use a westell 6100g modem, I have the local ip address set for 192.168.1.1 and I got a linksys wireless router and the ip address set for 192.168.9.1. Then I plug my modem into the wan port and it works. What am I doing is setting a static ip address from my modem to the router and using the router to distribute my address through the network. If you have any printers on the network you need to change that numter to 192.168.9.x number. If you don't have two different numbers set the router will take over.

I thought the 900 series zyxel was a multi ip address router modem, if your connecting a router or switch try supplying your gateway, dns info from your isp to the device.
