I had the exact same problem and I consulted the manual. All you have to do is turn the PSCAN swtich off. It is located on the back of the dvd player. Then turn the dvd player back on and your problem should be fixed.

I have a Memorex MVD4544 that I have never been able to get to record VCR's. I have a HD TV and even the cable guy could not get the thing to record. Any suggestions?

Your DVD remote should have a button marked I/P. Press that button to toggle between PSCAN split screen and normal screen.
