How do i correct a resolution mismatch on a 42 inch sylvania tv? I only have the cable box hooked up to the tv and no other electronics are hooked up to it

There is no resolution settings for tv. It's automatically select the resolution from the input device. If you didn't see the picture then you have to set the output resolution of the setopbox.
If you wish to get some details the check the below added link

My tv says that i have a resolution mismatch and to change the devices resolution but i don't know how to do that.

I've seen this before when using an HDMI connection to a PS3. You need to hook the PS3 up with Red, White, Yellow cables and then access the PS3's display options. You need to match the resolution sizes for both devices. There should only be a few options in this menu so do some trial and error to find the one that looks best :)

Hope that helps!

I am trying to hook up my PS3 into my room (Emerson 22 inch flatscreen with HDMI) I am plugging it in with the HDMI cable when it says "Resolution mismatch!" Is that because it was previously on...

This is because your Emerson does not support full HD (unlike your 52").
To fix this:
i) Make sure your PS3 is off (showing red light) ii) Hold down the power button for 5-6 seconds until you've heard two beeps
You should now be able to reset your video options - make sure 1080P is not checked and you should be able to use your PS3 fine with your Emerson.
When you reconnect to your bigger TV, do the same trick with the power button again and turn 1080P back on.

How to format so ps3 works

If it's one of the original PS3's you can hold the power button down when you're powering it up until it beeps and then let go of the power button. This will make the PS3 search for what video devices are plugged in. If you're using the HDMI it will say "An available HDMI device was detected. Do you want to output video and audio using HDMI?", and you wan to say YES. Then it will automatically set the resolution (should set to 1080i) and give you 30 seconds to confirm the video works by saying YES again. This TV will not support a 1080p output so if you try to change the PS3 to 1080p resolution it will not work.

I have also received this message when I had a bad HDMI cable.

Trying to hook up HDMI to PS3 and the TV keeps saying not a supported format

Try using another AV cable (like a normal composite cable) and try going through your PS3 setup. It may be that it is trying to go to 1080p or something because it is the HDMI, which wouldn't work on yours I bet. See if you can disable the higher resolutions and try the HDMI again to see if you can get the 720p to work. Hope this helps!
