Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

Microwave re-started I have a 1991 Panasonic NN-5560A microwave oven that re-started on it's own. I was heating a frozen dinner on medium power for 8 minutes. I left the room while it cooked and heard the five beeps indicating it stopped cooking. After a couple minutes I entered the kitchen to find it had re-started and the clock said 6 minutes left to cook, still on 50% power. My dinner was overcooked with the extra couple minutes, so I know it had completed the previous cycle. Have you heard of this happening and is it time to get a new microwave? We've never had problems with it. How would it re-set itself that way and turn on again?

The Start pad on the keypad may be starting to short. If so, a new keypad (membrane switch) would fix it.

If you might want to replace it yourself, I have uploaded a handy guide with pictures showing you what's typically involved. It's at

We have critical safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

The part # needed is A64795790AP "membrane switch" for $46.88 available here.

Re: Overheat Microwave or...?

Magnetron (supplies microwave radiation [energy]) or any of the high voltage components internally. More than likely, the HV (high voltage) diode has burned out and is probably cheaper to purchase a new one than have someone repair it unless they can do it for free or you simply pay for the part.

Sanyo microwave EMS667W, diff high power ratings

A couple of things: If the dinner is in an aluminum pan, DON'T put it in your oven. Typically, high power units need about 3-5 minutes to heat a dinner so you should have heated it through. The power default is usually full power. Usually, there is a minutes button that should give you incremental minutes for programming.

Try using a standard nonmetallic cup (beaker) and fill it with water. Heat for 2 minutes. The water should be boiling hot. If not, your oven is not doing it right.
