Question about Humidifiers

Open Question

Our furnace has an AutoFlo A40 humidifier attached. We have turned the humidistat to "off", but the water runs into and out of it continuously. How do we shut the water supply off?

You need to determine whether the problem is in the solenoid or in the furnace electronics. You could put a voltmeter on the solenoid connection to see if the furnace is still holding the solenoid open after the blower stops. This will tell you whether it is the solenoid or not.

I WOULD CHECK TO SEE IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH V/A OUT-PUT ON TRANSFORMER. I DONT KNOW IF YOURS CAME WITH ITS OWN TRANSFORMER. IF IT DIDNT YOU SHOULD HAVE A MINIMUM OF A 40 V/A RATING STAMPED OR PRINTED ON THE EXISTING TRANSFORMER. IF THE TRANSFORMER IS EXTREAMLY HOT ... YOU MAY NEED A 75 V/A TRANSFORMER WITH THE SAME VOLTAGES. INCREASING THE V/A CANNOT DAMMAGE ANYTHING IT JUST GIVES YOU MORE POWER WHEN EXCESIVE CONTROLS AND WIRING ARE ADDED TO A HVAC LOW-VOLAGE (24v) CIRCUIT. IF YOU LIKE YOU CAN CALL ME AT 727-363-7071. I AM A RETIRED HVAC&R CONTRACTOR WITH 45 YEARS EXPERIENCE. I HATE THE NEW SENSORS THEY HAVE TO ACTIVATE THESE NEW HUMIDIFIERS. I USE TO WIRE THE HUMIDIFIER TRANSFORMER (SUPPLIED WITH HUMIDIFIER) TO THE LINE (110V) SIDE TO THE LOW SPEED ON YOUR BLOWER MOTOR. THAT WAY THE ONLY THING THAT INTERUPTS THE CICUIT IS THE HUMIDISTAT. YOU NEVER WANT THE HUMIDIFIER TO RUN IF YOUR SYSTEM IS NOT "CALLING FOR HEAT". NEVER TRY TO ENERGIZE THE WATER SOLENOID THROUGH YOUR HEAT WIRE(USUALLY SMALL THE WHITE WIRE) FROM THE THERMOSTAT. THIS WILL RESULT IN BURNING YOUR HEAT ANTICIPATOR OUT ON THE T-STAT.

Sounds like you may have put 120v through a 24v solenoid and humidistat.
Is the HUM terminal on the furnace 120v or 24v?
If it is a 120v terminal you will need a 120x24v transformer and a new solenoid and maybe a new humidistat.

Hi,
No, you need to attach one of the solenoid wires to the red wire and one to the white wire.
So, undo the wire nut with the three wire and hook one of the red or white wirtes to the wire nut with only one wire. Then you sould have a black wire and one of the other red or white wires under each wire nut.
Problem amy be that you now have burned out the transformer that runs your Humidifier. By hooking the red and white wires together you may have shorted that out and killed it.
If you humidifier does not work after hooking it back uo right then you will need to change the transformer.

Hello, since this humidifier has a transformer installed with it, you bring one wire from humidifier to Humidistat and then a wire from humidistat to Transformer. You will need a current sensing relay to turn the humidifier on and off with the Furnace cycle. I will attach a link for a wiring diagram for your Humidifier http://docs.electronicaircleaners.com/aprilaire_700a_installation.pdf

I hooked the humidifer up and water keeps running it dose not stop when furnace stops. What might be wrong?

Hello, this could be tw o different things. when you install a humidifier you need a means of turning it on and off with the furnaces blower motor, this is done by either a sail switch, current sensing relay, or by the transformer being hooked up directly to the furnaces control board. if you do not have one of those three than the humidifier will run continuously untill u manually turn it off at the humidistat. If you have one of those three installed already than the solenoid valve is stuck and must be replaced.

Water and motor always run on Aprilaire 760, even when furnace is off.

Hope this solves your problem, look for the humidistat, it should be located on cold air return duct near furnace, make sure it is not set in the on position, if it is, then this is why it is staying on, please set humidistat any where from 20 to 35%, never over 40%. If the humidistat is set properly and is still running, you may have a electrical problem, humidifier circuit should only receive power(24 volts) when the indoor blower motor of furnace receives power, also if you have galvanized plumbing in your home, you may have a piece of rust or lime deposit in the humidifier solenoid valve preventing it from closing, turn water off to humidifier and disconnect water supply line entering solenoid valve inspect & clean protector screen. Good luck.

Our aprilaire humidifier is only 4 years old and it does not seem to be working. We have static in the house and when I did test mode it never drained water like it was supposed to. Any ideas what I can do...

Hope this helps, check and see if humidistat is set to 35% humidity and that bypass damper on humidifier is in the open position or winter position.(humidistat is usually located on cold air return duct near furnace). Next, replace humidifier media pad, remember to replace media pad (filter) annually, you also may want to clean any lime deposit out of humidifier housing with a solution of warm water and white vinegar before installing your new media filter.Remember to turn power off at side of furnace when cleaning humidifier and replacing media. Before installing new media turn power back on to furnace, set humidistat to the on position, turn furnace thermostat above room temp., and inspect humidifier to see if water is running from top,(you may want to have a bucket under humidifier when checking for water), if you see water running, turn power back off to furnace, properly install new media filter, reconnect humidifier cover & set humidistat to 35%. If you do not see water present, check water supply valve to humidifier and make sure its turned on. If water supply valve is open, then check water supply tubing for blockage. And the last things to check is to make sure all registers through out your home are open and not blocked by any objects, also make sure furnace filter is cleaned, if none of this works refer to installation manual to see if humidifier was sized and installed properly, Good luck.

Honeywell HE260 leaks somewhere

Neither, even if the solenoid or humidistat stick, it should always drain properly. Is the unit mounted on the cold air return duct or the supply plenum? If it's mounted on the supply plenum, the water panel might be getting blown forward and spilling the water. High efficient furnaces also can leak water on the floor if its drain is restricted. If hum. is mounted on return duct make sure drain is clear by blowing through it. On Honeywell hum's I've seen the rubber hose from the solenoid valve to the distributor tray leak too, check the rubber 1/4" hose.

There is no water going into humidifier. I have water going up to the solenoid assembly but nothing going into the humidifier.

Turn the humidistat all the way up and listen for a click at the solenoid valve. If it clicks, then the solenoid valve is probably plugged, scaled up or stuck. They can be disassembled and cleaned depending on the type, but it would be easier to replace it.

If no click, check for a power problem in the circuit.

My honeywell humidifier attachment on my furnace will not start after the summer with water running to it.I have the humidity cranked up, but the filter is still bone dry.

Humidifiers usually are wired up to ONLY come on when the Heat is on and the fan running....anyother time you check it it will not be powered or wet...turn your heat on , wait till the fan comes on...then turn up your humidistat you should hear a click if its a flow through type and water should start flowing from the top...or if its tyhe drum style with the sponge...you should see it then turning...if it doesnt turn the pad/spindle may not be installed properly...if only fits one way

No water going to furnace humidifier

The furnace should be equipped with a #50 relay to turn the Humidifier on and off when only when the furnace blower is on. You should have a test mode on your humidistat. Do you have water coming up to the solenoid valve? Make sure that the saddle valve is turned on to supply the water to the humidifier. Is your humidistat set high enough to turn the humidifier on? Is it plugged in?

Water runs when furnace is off, but stops when furnace is on.

the 760 humidifier does not need a transformer wired externally. the 760 has its' own 24v transformer inside the fan compartment. this transformer will provide the power to enrgize the water solenoid as needed. it sounds like to me the additional trasnformer is hot all the time. when the furnace comes on, the unit gets power and the internal transformer is cancelling the power from the external transformer. this would explain why it quits running when the heat is on. since the external transformer is hot all time, when the heat shuts off, the solenoid is getting energized by the external transformer. to make this run correctly, you need to get rid of the external transformer. leave the humidifier high voltage wires hooked up so they are only hot when the furnace runs. if you have a humidistat that has a r and c terminal, you will need to wire these directly to the r and c on the furnace control board and move the switch inside the humidistat to "power". make sure it is not on "bypass". then wire your 2 brown wires from the humidifier to each of the "h" terminals on the humidistat. if you have a humidistat that only has 2 terminals, wire one brown wire to each of the terminals. this should allow it to run properly.
