My Gateway NV78 looses the wirweless signal if the computer is more than 10 feet from the router. Three other computers can pick up the signal anywhere in the house. Any ideas?

Your internal video card doesn't behave very well when paired with your router - it happens. The only way to fix that is to use a separate USB wireless key from the same manufacturer as the router.

Well the internal antennas in net books are not that universally functional, depending on strength of signal etc ,your brand of pc is not that hot either,I have known a netbook to function differently even frome different points in the same room.
one thing you can do is take your pc apart and solder in a reverse polarity sma connector ,then use a piece of the smallest co-ax you can find(rg 174) or try a military -spec rg 174 co-ax.The only problem then is soldering it to the internal co-ax linking your wi-fi card to the internal intenna, you might even find just cutting this very thin co-ax gives you a better pattern but if you do solder it in you can then link an external omni-directional antenna to your pc and this migh give you a connection just to the strongest signal and not sniff out irrelevant connections you cant connect to anyway---good luck!

So reformat a computer that can't access the hard drive, interesting trick. I believe the OP said the machine hangs in limbo with Power Lights on, I assumed the Lights are on, but no one is home, sort of like some of these solutions. Why am I not paid millions of dollars for being the smartest man alive?

It seems that the signal is strong next to the router, but drops to 1 bar within 30 feet away? What is the most likely solution.

Hi,
Routers generally have a strong signal for up to 10 meters. However no obstacles should be in the way. 30 feets is about 10 meters so the router is loosing its signal strength. If you would like to extend the strength of your router you can buy a range expander. This device acts as a repeater of the signal so from 10 meters you can go to 15 or 20 meters.

I just conected my DI-524 with a new cable modem

The first question is whether your change of service provider really has any connection with your new lack of range. If your new cable modem contains a wireless router, it's possible it is interfering with your old router. You only need one, so in that case you should remove your DLink and configure your wireless cable router to your satisfaction. Otherwise, you may have coincidentally picked up a new source of interference; you may want to change the channel on your DLink router to see if that improves your range. The third possibility is that your DLink radio is going sour with age -- it happens -- and may simply need replacement.

Have you tried changing the channel? This might help icrease your signal aslo avoid putting it near wall and if possible put somewhere higher (5-10 ft above the ground)

2 Wire DSL Wireless modem range expander

you might want to try to change the wireless channel 1. open your internet browser 2. type on the address bar 192.168.1.254/management or 172.168.0.1/management and press Enter 3. type your system password (modem password) 4. go to home network -> wireless 5. change your wireless channel to 9 - 10 if after changing the channel it still wont work please check for EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) such as electric appliances, hallucinogen lamps, WIRELESS PHONES, satellite dish and or alarm systems. also make sure that you dont put your router on a carpet. usually a good distance between your router and the computer is around 5 - 20 feet with no walls between them since walls also contribute on the interference. one last note, keep your router away from water i.e. aquariums, water dispenser and the like since water contributes to the interference of the wireless signal

Reconfigure router

Changing settings on your computer does not affect your router, but since the other computers cannot pick up the signal, then there is something wrong here.. See if there is a reset button on the Motorola and press it for 30 seconds to see if the router resets to its original configuration. If not, then you need to hardwire your computer to the router and get into the config page. usually, to do this, you just open up a browser and in the address line, type in the Default Gateway Address (usually this is 192.168.1.1).

To find the DG for your LAN:

Start > Run > cmd (ok)

From the Command Shell type:

ipconfig /all > ip.txt
notepad ip.txt

This should open a window with all your IP information in it. you will find a line called Default Gateway.. this is the address (probably 192.168.x.x) that you put in your Browser Window Address Line to access the configuration page of the router..
