ok..well theres a lot of question in there, lemme take a shot at it.
the hi/low switch explained: the hi/low switch tells the amp what signal voltage is being delivered to the amp...hi-power (4-15volts) or low-power(micro-volts). Your aftermarket head unit had what are called pre-outs (or preAmp outs) meaning the source signal (your music) is not amplified before being delivered to the amplifier...sooo...your amplifier setting for your aftermarket radio would be 'low' to tell the amp that the music source being sent to it is low-voltage.
Typically a manufacturers radio will not have pre-outs, they will be amplified by the radios internal amp to anywhere from 4volts on up, and you need to tell your jl audio amp that the source music being supplied is 'hi' voltage.
soo...of course...if you are sending 10volts to the amplifier and tell it that your sending micro-volts (low setting) your amp will over-amplify the signal and thus the overwhelming bass you experienced.
You have 3 sets of wire connecting to the amp (besides the rca connection), Red is power from the battery, Black is the round wire (shorter the better), lastly Blue is the remote turn on wire. Without the remote turn on, your amp will not power up regardless of the power from the battery.
RCA connectors are for your audio, it carries the noise signal to your amp from the head unit...
there is a micro switch inside the player than turns off the radio when the cassette is being played, this switch fails and locks out the radio, this defective switch causes the radio to not switch switch back on when the cassette is removed, u do not mention the make model or year so that is about as much as i can give you right now, but in most cases if this is an older car it is best to try find another used radio on EBAY, if it is an aftermarket unit just replace it, the repair cost in most can exceed what the cost of a replacement is.
your amps rem wire is hooked to the power antenna wire on your head unit and so when you turn off the radio you would nolonger need an antenna so it powers down and would lower the antenna.Depending on the head unit you should have one output for the power antenna and one for the amp rem......If your head unit doesn't have the rem output you can wire it to the switched wire that powers your head unit but keep in mind the amp will stay on while you have the key in acc or run position even if your head unit is off. hope this helps!
What head unit do you have?
Is there a dedicated subwoofer output?
If not, have you switched the rear output to sub output?
Is the amplifier set to LPF (low pass filter), and the gain turned up?
Many things can be wrong, but the fact that there is anything coming out of the subs is a good thing.
Start at the beginning - Head unit, then check amplifier gain/crossover setting.
If you are using a hi level adapter on factory radio, is the Bass on the radio up? is the output gain on the convertor up?
neither of those units use fibre optic cables! but it sounds like you puled out the antenna wire behind the head unit. if you try and search radio stations without the manual tune on and it keeps changing frequency on it and never stops then its the antenna plug.
OK I believe there is a small indented "Reset Button" around somewhere on the back of the unit, With the unit powered ON, & using a small diameter implement, straightened paper clip etc, press IN the button and this should "Reset" ya unit. This may indeed fix all your problems as the Unit "Reads" the speakers at turn on.
