Question about GE JBP82 Electric Kitchen Range

Replacing Glass Cooktop on GE JPB82

Hi I have a crack in the glass cooktop of my GE JBP82 range. From looking online and reading, it seemed that all I needed was the cooktop piece and I could unscrew the elements and replace the top which would be cheaper than an entire replacement range.

I got the replacement top in today but it seems the metal frame that holds the elements on the (old) cooktop is bonded to the cooktop. Can anyone confirm if this is correct- is there an adhesive used on these frames? I believe I have removed all of the screws/brackets. And if it is bonded is there a way to remove it or am I going ot have to buy replacements elements/frame as well?

Thanks!

    Thanks for the fast response!

Hmmm... let me see if I understand and maybe clarify a bit. I did pull out the cooktop by removing the two screws underneath the top above the oven door and then swinging it up off its hinges at the back of the unit.

Then, I removed the two brackets (I believe those are the 1/4 inch screws you are talking about) that hold the frame that the elements are in, but the frame is adhered to the top. The replacement top doesn't have the frame that the elements individually latch into and I was hoping that frame just came off all as one.

So while I could remove all the elements from the frame, I have no way to connect them to the new top.

    Does that make sense?

Argh. Looks like I have the wrong part number- similar model but not exact. And of course the one I really need is $100 more!

Thank you for your post, isaak goldman!

I understand that you are seeking instructions in order to replace the cooktop on your Frigidaire range. However, this is not a simple DIY job. I would recommend having a professional technician come out to ensure that the range is properly disassembled and the cooktop installed correctly to prevent any future issues. Hope this information is helpful. -Matt

Can I cook on a cracked cooktop

The glass cook tops are made of tempered glass. Even small crack can eventually lead to shattering if the glass if heated in a condition where it has a weakness. In addition, depending on the severity of the crack, any liquids that boil over while cooking can end up directly on the heating elements. This could lead to catastrophic failure of the elements and/or an electrical shock hazard. It is strongly recommended that the cooktop is replaced as soon as possible.

Glass cooktop scratched

Unfortunately, these style cooktops are VERY fragile to scratching and cracking. The wrong kind of cookware can also mark them. Copper or aluminum pots and pans can discolor them. Do not use pyrex (glass) cookware on them either. Stainless is the best. NO CAST IRON either. Anyways, there's not much can be done without replacing the top itself.

I have GE Profile glass cooktop. After cleaning

you can safely use a razor scraper such as you would use to scrape paint. It will not harm the surface and then you can polish it with the cleaner.

Deep scractches on glass stove top

hi there,

you can try and use a cleaner intended for glass cooktops. if the scratches are deeper than that, i would recommend replacing the cooktop itself, as the heat from the elements may cause it to crack.

thanks
