Carrier 38YRA 042 Fan Motor Problem?

I have Carrier 38YRA042 and the fan does not circulate. I can hear the power come on and something is trying to work but no rotation. The fan motor just gets hot. Is it the fan motor and can replace this myself?

The fan moves freely and does not stick. Could it still be the motor?

Every air conditioner is equipped with at least two motors, the compressor and the fan motor. It is possible for the fan motor to be defective and the compressor to be running. If this is the case the unit will appear to be running and may even sound "normal" but no air is blowing out the front or back of the unit. If, after removing the cover of the unit you discover the fan blade is very stiff and difficult to rotate, the fan motor should be replaced. If the fan blade turns freely the circuit powering the fan motor will require electrical troubleshooting. It will be necessary to have a qualified technician locate the cause of the problem, which may be either a problem with the capacitor, the selector switch or the motor itself.

If you have no prior experience, I'd say it is better you contact a professional repairman. It may cost a bit extra, but will be worth it in the long run..

Hi,

Other then the fan motor itself, another possibility (most likely) is the starting capacitor. This often looks like a canister with two terminal on one ends. The purpose of the capacitor is to provide the initial push to kick start the fan motor.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

Yes, it could still be the motor, however, more often than not (unless motor is burned) it would be the capacitor.

Very loud when fan is running

This is likely caused by a faulty blower motor bearings, or the fan has something in it or it could possibly have broken. Shut down power to unit, remove cover and inspect the fan shaft, blades, and spin it. it should freely spin. If it hangs up you likely have a bad blower motor.

38CKC060 Carrier. Outdoor unit-fan does not spin, noise and very hot inside the cage!

It sounds like your fan motor is burnt up. If the noise you are hearing is coming from the motor itself, then it's going to have to be replaced. One way to check this also is to turn the unit off and try to turn the fan blades by hand, if you cant get to it, then use something skinny and long enough to drop through the opening on top. If there is any resistance, than its difinitly a bad motor. If the noise you are hearing is coming from the compressor, then your fan motor still might have a chance and only needs a capacitor which is a round or oval part inside the units electrical compartment. Depending on how mechanically inclined you are, it is possible to fix these yourself. Just a warning though, if your fan hasn't been running and the compressor has, it can or could burn up the compressor also. This is another reason why it can be hot inside the cage. Your compressor will go into internal lockout if it gets to hot and will not come back on until it cools, but it can only handle so much. Hope this points you in the right direction and good luck!

Carrier AC fan not working right

it sounds like the capacitor is shot there is usually a duel capacitor one side is for the compressor and the other side is for the condensor fan motor if it is bad the motor will over heat and turn off on internal overload

AC fan stopped

Sounds just like a seized bearing on the fan motor. They can be repaired but it's usually less to purchase a new motor. Now all you have to do is figure out how to get the motor out. To get you started, you need to partially disassemble the top portion of the condenser cabinet. This will give you access to the fan motor assembly. Which model do you have? That information will be on the nameplate which is on the side where the electrical enters the cabinet. That reminds me, always pull disconnect and trip breaker before starting.

Compressor not doing much

I am assuming that you are talking about a central ac unit. On a central air unit the outside fan must be running whenever the compressor is. If it's not the compressor will shut off from overheating withing minutes. First you need to shut off the unit for several hours and let it cool completely down. Then turn it on briefly to see if the compressor starts and see if the fan tries to start.( I am assuming the compressor starts and runs.) If the fan won't start try testing the capacitors. There are usually two one for the fan one for the compressor. Sometimes there will be one combo one. Mark the wires and remove the capacitor. Get it tested and if bad replace it. This will probably do the job. If not test for current at the fan motor. Also test to see if it turns freely. The motor may need to be replaced. This will run about $50. The capacitor should always be replaced when the motor is changed anyway.

Your cooling coil may be frozen. Turn the fan on and the cooling to off so air will circulate to defrost the coil. After air circulation is re-established in about 90 minutes turn the cooling back on. Operate the system with the fan on when in the cooling mode should eliminate the freezing problem.
