Question about Sony KP-51HW40 51" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

All good until switching input - green flash, video turns off FAST, status light flashes 5 times.

So my Sony TV must have something bonky with it - as in something is about to die....I'm a reasonably advanced user, with electronics training, soldering/voltage and test tools are pretty easily accessed by me. Anyway, the picture is PERFECT as long as the source feeding the TV is powered up before the set is turned on. If either sourse unit is not powered on, or I switch input, the green tube would let out a BIG green, BRIGHT green, blinding flash then the set turns off and the status light blinks FIVE times which means LIKELY the video out on my CG board (board at bottom of each tube) aka IC 7201 may be going south, OR it's the CRT drive - aka IC 309 on A board is faulty - which I would not think correct or I'd have the problem ALL the time, would be the likely culprits. So I took the whole thing apart, found a charred resistor STILL HOLDING 330ohm value on CG board - resistor being R7219 - so I replaced that resistor, cleaned and gently pried the contacts at the bottom of the tube outward, then re-adjusted all three tubes at the hi-volt pot's, and then fired it all up once more....now the response to green flash then off is MUCH longer, as in - if I change input and wait 40-50 seconds a bunch of cool green "sparklies" appear in random flashes then the BIG green blinding flash hits and the set turns off - again I assume it's a protection mode which I am okay with. Should I replace IC 7201 - part #TDA6120Q/N2/N1 in hopes that the problem **** off or am I wasting my time? I kind of like this set, I would appreciate getting a bit more time out of it. Oh yeah - factory remote is lost - if the trouble codes can't be cleared any other way than with the factory remote - I may have to find a new remote I guess. Does anyone know if trouble codes from old errors hold these sets in a "gimp mode"? Thanks!

My KP51 HW40 does the green flash, and turns off with no warning. We let it cool off a bit and it works for a while. But, it may be better to see if it is worth repairing, or should we recycle it? I am far far far from the competency of the previous writer, and I have really enjoyed this set up to now, and would not want to discard it if I don't have to.
    Thanks for any help,
    Patrick

I replaced the TDA6120Q - and also once more replaced the 330 ohm resistor (it burned again just before I replaced the TDA6120Q - Suddenly flash then off was non existent BUT a slight convergence problem appeared. Convergence is - 9 times out of 10 - a problem with a faulty STK - I replaced the STK's for giggles - and because I wasn't going to be beaten by this thing and be darned if it hasn't been FLAWLESS for the last month. I hope it'll hold out from burn out for a little longer....

Hello: Have you tried to adjust you Green Screen control on the focus block assembly. located behind the front panel assembly. Here is a solution that might help you, turn off the green by turning off this control, make sure u look at the block and make sure you are not turning the green focus knob instead of scrn crl. Turning the control slowly to the left the retrace lines should disappear as the green video darkens. Then turn the control slowly to the right just until the retrace lines reappear, then turn back slowly left just until the lines go away. If the screen is Blanking on green tube only then you have a video blanking problem on the main signal board. Or possibly a IK bias problem. It is also possible that the green CRT is defective. The FBT is not bad because the screens are lighting up indicating you have high voltageand heater voltage which is derived from one of the secondary windings of the FB. If it is a Blanking problem i would look into replacing the A Board assembly.

Ths 5 blinks usually indicate an AKB problem. There is a break in the video path. I'll look up your specific model and post the results here. Please update this if you wish to attempt the repair yourself.

Sony KF-50WE620 - 5 Flashes

5 flashes indicates ballast malfunction. 4 flashes indicates fan not working. I would replace the big fan in the back because it is a common failure for this model. But befor this check to see if the lamp door is warped from overheating. If it is the wiring on the balast good be burnt and the light engine could be damaged.

Green flashing is normal. Red flashes are error codes. Count the error flashes.

3x - Lamp cover position or cover detect switch bad.
4x - One or more fans failed RPM test
5x - Lamp power supply/ballast failure
6x - Thermal fuse failed (usually)

the screen might work fine for a couple of seconds, but then it fades away or deteriorates. This means the lamp is going bad.
