Mtd 22" Yard Machine Push Mower Logo
Anonymous Posted on Oct 23, 2010

I have a Yard Machine Lawn mower by MTD it has a briggs and stratton engine. The pull cord pulls, to easily I might add, but will not start the lawn mower. It doesn't seem to engage the motor. What might be the problem? Thank you!

When I pull the cord it doesn't even turn the part that goes to the engine but the pulley above turns. Could something have come disconnected? I am unfamiliar with lawnmowers. Thank you for your help though. I really do appreciate it.

Remove the recoil housing and make sure the dogs fly out when you pull the rope in not losen the 5/16 bolt in the middle of the recoil about 1/8 of a turn an pull the rope again make sure the dogs come out when you pull the rope.

If you think the rope pulls too easily the engine may not have enough compression. Consider doing a compression test or a leak-down test on the cylinder.

Repair lawn mower pull cord

Home Depot sells a replacement pull cord kit that has great instructions. My mower, however, had pop rivets holding the cover on the engine, so if yours does too, get a pop rivet tool with the correct size pop rivets before you start drilling out the old pop rivets.

What spark plug does my yard man lawn mower take? here are the numbers off the engine 110602-0131-e1

According to my data, you'll need a Briggs and Stratton Part No. 692051 for that machine. Cross reference to Champion Plug RC12YC. Note that this plug shows a recommended gap of only .020, as opposed to the .030, most Briggs plugs use. Best of luck to you.

Pull start cord got pinched. Dumb me took off

Yes you can put the spring back in but it takes patience. Wind the spring inside the pully first. Then install the cord on the outside of the pully. Make sure you wind both in correct direction. You probably should replace the cord while you have it apart. The parts would be listed by the engine brand and model number, not by MTD. Probably a Briggs & Stratton engine? You can go to their web site :www.briggsandstratton.com to get part numbers. Or you can try a place like www.jackssmallengines.com

Its a brand new mower just got it out of the box.its a 675 series briggs and stratton and the pull cord only comes out 4 inches before the pull cord mechanism jams

The drive shaft might just need to be lubricated. Turn the mower on its side (carefully) and squirt some oil onto the drive shaft where it disappears into the mower. Turn the blade by hand and squirt some more oil in, until the blade turns easily. Then try the cord again and see if it's easier to pull.

Hope that helps!
