Question about GE Quiet-Aire Ductless Mini Split System Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Compressor pulling into a deep vacuum and not cooling. Acts like major restriction, but don't see any frosting. We have very little data available on system and when pushing test button in outdoor unit pressures go up very , very high and trips out compressor. Unit is a heat pump, any help is much appreciated, Ben.

Without the frosting i would tend to believe it may be under charged, or non combustables like water in your system

My aw0893l air conditioner does not get cold. do i need freon?

Well first off is the compressor running? When you turn on the unit the fan will start. Turn the unit on to fan only. Then turn it into the cooling mode do you hear something else start? That would be the compressor. Remove the front panel so you can see the cooling coil (evaporator ) if it is freezing and has frost on just part of the coil top or bottom you have lost Freon or a system restriction.. One of the major problems with air cons is a very dirty or plugged condenser coil, which is the outside coil. If you have cotton wood trees in your area this is probably the problem.

Hope this helps Lynn

How to dislodge cooling coil restriction in friedrich CP06E10

it is 'highly unlikely' that you have a restriction in the cooling coil; at least in the refrigeration part of it.
Most likely you are talking about dirt/or something - that is lodged in the fins of the cooling coil, in which case if you can't get it out by hand/or with a tool of some type (be careful around the copper coil) then you probably just need to wash out the coil with a water hose.
I would take the unit out of the window and either wash it out with a water hose or blow it out with air.
In any event - it would be a good time to make sure both coils (the front one that gets cold and the back one that gets warm/hot) are good and 'clean.'
As to if you really do have a restriction in the refrigeration part of the AC - that can be handled by an AC tech who would first try to blow it out - or by pulling a vacuum. If all else fails the restriction can be isolated and then cut out of the system, in which case - he/she would need to reconnect the copper line (by brazing it) - and then properly charge it.
However, like I've said - a 'restriction' is so unlikely - I really don't think you have one.

A portable air conditioner may not cool for several reasons. Check the filter by removing the unit's grill and clean the filter.
Also check for clogs in the evaporator or condenser coils by light vacuuming. Make sure the evaporator isn't frosted over, but if it is, allow it to defrost and normal operation should resume.
Lastly, ensure the ambient temperature is lower than your AC's set temperature, as this can prevent cooling. However, if all of these steps fail to resolve your problem, the compressor may be malfunctioning, and in this case, the compressor needs to be replaced or repaired.
In summary, if the air won't cool, remove the grill and clean the filter. Clean out any clogs in the evaporator or condenser coils by vacuuming them and scrubbing them lightly with an old toothbrush. And since fan is working, you compressor might be defective.
I hope the above information is clear.

Foward roof AC comes on, blower works, compressordrawers current and feels like it is running but no cold air. Should it be checked for possible repair or replaced?

I'd have it checked to see if compressor is working and cooling. No make or model number shown, but removing the top cover and having a look and feel at the cooling lines to and from compressor should tell you. Compressor running and no frost on tubes to/from it, is a pretty good indication of bad compressor. Keep away from wiring. If you see frost on tube, then I'd look at a restriction or good cleaning as possible solutions. Was it working good up until now?

Air not very cold. Any advice

Make sure the condenser fan and evaporator fan are running. Check your filters. Make sure the coils are not clogged with dirt or dust. Make sure the compressor is running. Get the refrigerant charge checked.

Stops blowing air

remove cover at ceiling so you can see in at fins and see if they are frosting up bad. If they are, I suspect during AC installation, they didn't open up ducts on discharge properly and air flow is restricted, which will cause freeze up, especially if low flow from discharge ducts. I'm assuming it is a ducted system. You may have to remove or drop down entire ceiling assy, to see if the ducts into ceiling have any blockage. Sometimes they don't cut rubber roof material back far enough, or misaligned ducts and cause restricted flow to ceiling vents, which will cause unit to frost up, which kicks out compressor until frost is melted, then compressor kicks back in and cooling happens again.

You have a restriction in the system. Probably in the TXV or orifice in the A/H.
The burn out sent trash/fragments through the system. I would open the sytem and blow nitrogen through, then pull a deep vacuum.
You may need to install a low side filter/drier. When you open the system change out the high side drier again for sure.

I am trying to charge up my a/c on a 95 olds ciera but the a/c compressor will not kick in as the system is completely empty. How can i engage the compressor?

With a vacuum pump, pull a deep vacuum on the system then charge the refrigerant in. It will go in by itself with the system under a vacuum.
You can also remove the wire connector going to the pressure switch on the accumulator and jump it out with a small wire. While the car is running and the switch set for cool the compressor will come on.

Frost build-up

Two things will cause this: low air flow or low refrigerant. If you are in cooling mode then check your filter and indoor air flow. If that's good then you'll have to get a technician to check your refrigerant. If it's low it has a leak that needs to be fixed.
