Hi, I hope someone out there can help me by suggesting some file system repair tool that works with WD My Book...
Some (or actually quite many) of the files of my "Western Digital My Book" USB drive have recently become corrupted. After starting my computer today, I discovered three kind of problems with my files.
(1) Some of the folders have been replaced with a "file", i.e. the "type" of the file is "file" instead of "folder", so in Windows Explorer explorer I can therefore not navigate into the folder to get access to my files that should be there...
(2) Some other of the folders still remain as being folders and I can navigate into them but they contain **** files, for example, one directory that had about 30-50 zip-files and exe-files now contain these six "files" as in the picture below:
(3) Some other files also seem to be corrupted even though they seem okay when looking at them in the windows explorer. I do not know how many of these kind of corrupted files my harddrive have, but at least one folder of mp3 files looked okay (i.e. filename, file size and timestamp looked okay) but the files could not be listened to.
Is there any tool (prefereably freeware of course) that can help me to repair the files and folders from my corrupted drive ? (since this drive obviously is total **** that corrupts the file system, I should be able to use the warranty but I do not want to send the drive away to someone who then will recover the files and get access to my private files...so therefore I would want to find a freeware tool that can help me to repair the file system myself)

You could run the chkdsk disk utility Click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to repair any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your Hard Drive. or an easier way to run the chkdsk utility Click start control panel administrative tools computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart have no input while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may further damage your computers Operating System and Hard Drive
This error mostly comes when the bkf file is corrupt, BKF file may gets corrupted due to virus attack or interruption during backup process. You can repair your corrupt or damaged bkf file with the help of bkf repair tool. Download a good bkf repair tool from http://www.restorebkf.org/
I would suggest you to run a SFC scan on the computer. 1.Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click
All Programs, click Accessories, right-click
Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click
Allow. The access the drive by typing command for example - if you are facing trouble in C drive type C:
2.Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Did he try to recycle the files using the iMac? because sometimes if you recycle the files it will show that it was deleted from the harddrive but in reality they will remain there but the are hidden. I think the best way to check if the drive is full is to plug this drive to a computer that has a Windows operating system and make sure to show hidden files and delete all hidden folders that you will see in the drive to free the space completely.
you could run the check disk utility click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to fix any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive or go to control panel administrive tools computer management you can right click on the drive select properties tools check now?tick in both boxes to scan for and repair/recover any bad sectors and automaticall fix any corrupt files in xp hope this helps
The error means that you are using a file on the external hard drive and that it can not close that file when it is use. You have to close the program that is using the file first.
Example: Lets go on the assumption that you have your music collection on the external. If you still have your music player running when you try to disconnect, you will be greeting with the same error message.
If the external contains any files that your Operating System uses, you will get this message anytime the computer is on. An example of this can be your "Page File".
Shutting the computer down correctly is your safest bet until you find exactly what file is being used and what program is using it. During shut down, the computer closes any running programs. With no programs running, it will safely disconnect from the external HD because there will be no files in use.
If you manually disconnect it while the file is in use, you could very easily corrupt the file and make it unusable. This is comparable to an Operating System getting corrupted from a computer not being shut down correctly (pulling the power from wall without doing a shut down).
Simply put, the driver for any version of window 2000 or newer is already built into windows. If you've tried it on 2 non-adjecent ports(as pairs are simply a splitting of one hub) then you've already confirmed it is not the driver. For final confirmation(in case the windows drivers folder is corrupt), try it on a different computer. If this works, reply back telling me it's a failed driver, if not, your enclosure has failed.
If the enclosure has failed and you don't have any crucial files on it that you don't already have elsewhere, contact WD for a warranty replacement.
If the enclosure has failed and you DO have important files on it, try having your local PC shop move the hard drive into a new enclosure, if that works you're done, buy the new enclosure.
If both above options fail, your drive is damaged and you will need a pro to help get back your files. If this is the case, reply back with you location(Country, State and City) and I will pass along recommendations for your neck of the woods.
Is it showing the 300gig in the properties? if yes then try to copy with command mode,If again its given problem then u need to backup your data and format the drive, then try copying.I think it will work.
I don't want to seem too simplistic, but before taking any drastic measure, try the following: with the firewire cable disconnected, plug the DC in and then connect the drive with the computer (should be on) using the firewire. I hope it helps.
