You need to check your input sources for DVD as you can choose whether to use the analog or digital input signals. Check out Pg. 26 in the manual...if you are not using any of the digital ports, you should set both OPTICAL and COAX to OFF.

In regards to the speakers, check whether the speakers are not blown...easy check would be to switch them with the front ports... or use a AA battery and tap both poles of the battery.

Also, when testing, are you seeing "AUTO-SR(SB, SL, etc)" when testing the tones? Consider going through the steps on Pg. 24-25 in the manual.

sometimes with cable, satellite, or any dvr, the digital signal actually is intermittent and there is little we can do about it but add an analog audio connection for each device as a backup. per se, and put the receiver in auto input mode. the receiver will utilize the analog signal to fill in where the digital signal fails
good luck

Connection/configuration issue: I have a Denon

Just confirming my understanding of your connections :

1). The DVD1800BD output HDMI is connected to AVR3808's DVD-in HDMI.
2). The DVD/VHS recorder output HDMI is connected to AVR3808's DVR-in HDMI.
3). The DVD/VHS recorder input (S-video and L/R Audio) is connected to AVR3808's DVR-out(SVideo and L/R Audio).
Right?

What other inputs have been connect to your AVR3808?
Does the recorder have Component Video inputs?

Please also connect DVD1800BD's output(Component video, S-Video and L/R Audio) to AVR3808s' DVD-in similar inputs and try recording onto your recorder.

Actually, its possible that you may be having a HDMI HDCP communication issue(High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) with the source product (DVD1800BD). First check with the source equipment manufacturer for any updates to their products.

If HDMI video is not passing through your AVR3808, you can connect it thru the alternate connection method I have mentioned above.

If the connections/recording still does not happen with the added anolog cables, then let me know , we can trouble shoot it further.
I hope the above helps.

TV has no picture but has sound

Did you say you went in to DVR set-up and checked the component out audio option? I have had similiar problems with motorola dvr boxes and once I was able to enable audio output option the dvr digital output was fine. Find the manual for the model dvd and this may cure.

No surround sound from my PS3 through the Onkyo 5100. Video OK

Unfortunately only the higher end Onkyo Reciever pass audio over HDMI for sound. 605,705,805,905 exc. Your reciever will carry Video over HDMI but you will need a digital optical cable for sound.

thanks.

DVD movies do not play

A blue screen means the TV is not receiving a video signal. Check all connections, then try another player, cable, etc. Also, check DVD and TV AV settings.
