Question about Fantom Drives 300 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Fantom External Does Not Load

The drive has been working fine for me for two years. I turned it off for a couple of days (I was moving). And when I turned it on, it does not load up as usual. I also tried using my laptop to see if it was a USB problem, but the same thing happened. The blue light is on, I hear it spinning.
Help, I have years of important files in there.

Thanks

Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

  1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
  2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
  3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.

Kind Regards
Andrea

the controller on the external drive could have gone bad. i would first try removing the hard drive from that external enclosure and use a usb or esata dock and see if itll mount.

I have a FD 500GB hard drive, and have a problem in recognizing the hard drive with my media player as well as computer..it was working fine couple of days back since 2 years..suddenly this problem came...

Unfortunately it sounds like it may have crashed. Try placing it on its side and trying again. If it does the same thing the best you may be able to do is find a professional that can get the information off and put on another drive.

When i turn on my fantom green drive the green light keeps flashing

If the light turns on (mine was blue) but the drive is not recognized on your computer desktop that most likely means the drive does not have enough power. This happened to me too, and I took it to a computer expert and he said the drive was not even spinning. So it was either the external power source that broke or the internal power source, the power panel that broke. I took it to a batter plus and tested the wattage for the external power source and it was okay so then i took the entire drive apart and disconnected the naked hard drive from the power panel. Then I purchased "SATA to USB" cables (runs around 10-20 bucks) and connected the naked hard drive that way to the computer and it worked. So the problem is basically that the internal power panel is not working, and i had 2 fantom drives that both had this problem and they both worked after i did what i just said.. so I think your drive has the same problem since the light comes on but the drive is not spinning. Take it apart, buy some SATA to USB cables and it should work.

Drive is not switched on

check the input power switch on the rear of the unit...
It should be on 240V. Turn off the computer, then move the switch back and forth a couple of times... set to 240V. this assures the coorect input power to the external drive.

Secondly, move the USB port to another USB port on your computer. If it works fine, then it is a bad USB port.

Third, check the device driver in device manager on your software. try updating the driver... This solves a potential driver issue.

Good Luck,

Jeff

Blinking Lights

I had this EXACT same problem. Blinking blue light and the hard drive never powers on. VERY frustrating...I have a home studio was in danger of losing over a year's worth of original music. However, this problem has a solution which I read about on this site:
"The problem was with the power source not the actual drive so I ended up pulling the drive out of the case and purchasing a new case from Newegg.com. It now works fine and only cost about $30 to fix."

This is EXCELLENT advice and FixYa is the only place I read about this solution. Though I'm no newbie with computers, I certainly had never swapped out an external hard drive. But, in 30 minutes for about $30, this problem is TOTALLY SOLVABLE. I went to newegg.com and ordered this product:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817106095

an external Azio hard drive enclosure. Because I always used Firewire hard drives, I got an enclosure that accepted Firewire---however, many others are available with just USB 2.0. Following the directions that came with the enclosure, I removed my blue-light blinking, non-functional hard drive from its enclosure and placed it into the Azio. Now, the unit is working fine. No datawas lost and the Azio drive seems to be working properly.
THIS IS A FANTOM HARDWARE PROBLEM---NOT SOFTWARE PROBLEM! I encourage the MANY people who have complained about Fantom drives and gotten no assistance to try this solution and avoid Fantom in the future.
To whoever posted this solution: thanks a million. You made my day.

Drive NOT being recognized by WinXP

Put your ear to the drive and verify if it is making any strange low level sounds. Check to make sure the usb connection wasnt affected. YOu wont need a driver as it appears to be hardware related. Either the enclosure or drive may be failing.

Problem with my PC recognizing my external hard drive

If you know the files are there and the drive cannot be read then there must be a read error, the only other thing to try is a different usb or firewire port as the port itself may not be reading the drive. Try it first by putting in a different port while the pc is on then plugging in and then restarting if the device is not recognised. You may also try the drive in a friends pc to see if it is port trouble and not the drive

Fantom Drive TFDU16072A Error

2009 06 30 - I just had a similar problem. The Fantom external drive was working fine, but I had to shut down due to a thunderstorm. When I restarted the PC, the drive was not showing up. WHAT I FOUND: First, I didn't find this solution anywhere - everything seemed to point to a new install (or at least how to reformat and start over.) BUT, I right clicked on Computer, Manage, Disk Management - it still didn't show. On the right, under More Actions, I clicked 'rescan disks'. Now it shows up! And all of my data is right there. Whew!
