problem in installing in avg antivirus 8.0 avgmfx86.sys

  • AcesDwn Jun 18, 2008

I have (I think) the same problem....

    Local machine: installation failed
    Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgmfx86.sys: starting service....
    Error 0x80070002

I've looked in Add/Remove programs but it is not listed.

SO... It thinks it's installed, but I can't un-install to try again...

    Anyone else have ideas??

    Thanks,

    Joe

Added note: (I feel stupid now)

I found the "Uninstall AVG" link in my start menu, but got this:

Local machine: prepared for the installation
    Installation:
Error: Uninstallation is not possible. Product not installed.

This Laptop is an Acer TravelMate 630, Fresh install of Win XP Pro SP3

Setting it up for my son, so it is lacking...

    512MB Memory, 1.5ghz Processor.

Is this a glitch with AVG 8.0? I have older versions on other machine doing just fine...

    Any advice would be helpful

This is the error I'm getting after attempting to install AVG's free version of their virus protecting software.

"Action failed for file avgmfx86.sys: starting service....
    Error 0x80070002"

I have taken the following steps with a reboot after each step:

Uninstall all other anti-virus apps (had an old version of Norton before)

Ran CounterSpy (www.sunbeltsoftware.com) to remove AntiVirus08, the infamous fraudware app

        Ran RegClean

        Ran RegSeeker's autoclean feature

Did a thorough search for anything antivirus related incluiding "AVG", "Grisoft", "antivir08" (and variations).

Removed anything that was suspicious but clearly not system file that Win would need.

Installed all Windows updates, including SP 3
Not sure what else I can do at this point except install some other respectable antivirus software, like Panda or something. But it irks me to no end that AVG can't be installed on this computer.

    System data:
    MS Windows XP Home
    Version 2002
    SP 3
    HP brand
    Intel Celeron M, 1.GHz
    480 mb of RAM

Thanks in advance for the help!
    Hans

Sorry for the multiple posts in a single day...

I have solved this issue!!! (In my case anyhow)

WARNING: What I am posting here can cause SERIOUS problems with your computer if you do not know what you are doing. If you doubt yourself, then DO NOT DO THIS.

Using information I found at: http://www.fixya.com/support/t567993-local_machine_installation_failed

Heres what I did:
1) I downloaded the latest version of RegSeeker (Link provided in the other fixya post referenced above).

2) I ONLY did a "Find in Registry". Typed "AVG" and did a search. (I searched for Grissoft as well, but it found nothing)

3) With the list of registry entries I then at the bottom, selected all using the "Select" link(with a green checkmark next to it.)

4) Using the "Action" Link (Also at the bottom) I deleted all.

5) Go to "C:\Program Files" and delete the "AVG" Folder.

6) Reboot machine

7) Start fresh install of AVG 8.0

8) Perform updates to AVG 8.0

AGAIN... This worked for me. IT MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU.
Changes to your registry by ANY means should NOT be done by those not familiar with operating systems.

For what it's worth.
Joe

Trying to install avg free, but get 1 error. Action failed for file avgmfx86 sys starting service Error number 0x80070002

You may be infected by the virus Autoit.exe. Have your computer scanned with another antivirus before installing AVG. AVG Free (updated that is) is effective if already installed before the virus attacked. You may download and try a trojan cleaner dedicated for this purpose here.

Help please

This is simply a bad download. You will need to start by completely removing the failed install, otherwise you're going to run into it all over again. Now, did you save the down load or just run it straight from the net? If it was a straight run, you may have encountered a slight internet glitch during the run. What you want to do is save the download to the desktop, then right click on it and run as administrator. It should install properly this way. Another thing is make sure that you don't have any other Antivirus, spyware, or adware programs on the machine. If you do, you will need to remove them, AVG covers them all. The reason you want to remove them is because they perceives the AVG as a threat, especially other Antivirus programs, not a harmful threat, but a competitor threat, and will stop the download or install. Antivirus companies, especially Norton, doesn't like to lose their customers, so they throw in these little blocking programs, in hopes that it will detour you from going to another.

I am trying ti install agv anti virus i have completley unistalled norton but i kepp getting this error message action failed for file agvmfx86 sys starting service error 0x80070002

Always shut down all running programs before trying to install anything like AVG. If you already have an AV program, uninstall it before trying to install AVG.

If still having problems after doing that..... RE-Download AVG 7.5 FREE and try the install again.
Good Luck,
