When I try to start Family Tree Maker 2008, I get an error message "Family Tree Maker 2008 has stopped working" Has any one been able to solve this problem?

  • shazb Jul 29, 2008

I get the same message: Family Tree Maker has stopped working, but if I restart sometimes I get it to go and sometimes not, but then sometimes it just stops while I am in the middle of working on a tree.

It seems to be crashing about 60% of the time.

I have all latest updates on Vista, FTM, running Mcafee.

Have a new 3600 dollar computer and I can not get the FTM 2008 to install.
    Please email me.

I am trying to run FTM 2008 under Vista 64-bit. First two installs I loaded the downloadable update before trying execution, and got the "Family Tree Maker 2008 has stopped working" error. I did a third install without the downlkoadable update, and ran FTM with no problems - then I allowed it to download and install the update, and FTM has refused to run since that time, giving the same error. Does this experience agree with that of other users? I wanted the upgrade since it adds some useful reporting function - but it isn't going to prove very useful if I can't get at it. Has anyone received meaningful response from FTM regarding this problem? I have tried running with Administrator authority, and I have tried running it under Vista's compatability mode for XP - neither works, nor does the combination of both.

Family Tree Maker 2008 worked on my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop computer for the first three months after installing it. Then it started to stall when I was entering family data. Suddenly, it just started saying "Family Tree Maker 2008 has stopped working. Windows (Vista) is checking for a solution to the problem." Then that message would disappear and a new one would pop up "A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

The folks at Geek Squad suggested uninstalling the program and then reinstalling. That didn't work. So, here I am...

I have had the same problem since I upgraded to a new Vista PC - but in my case it never strated at all. I have tried the free 2009 upgrade whihc hasn't worked. I have been in touch with ancestry help and have exhausted all their suggestions. They have now " passed it on to their developers" and I have been waiting about since 3rd November for an answer. I'll let people know if they get back to me they have been helpful so far.

When I open FTM 2008 I get the message that the program was not closed properly and that I should compact the last open file at Tools, Compact file but I cannot go to Tools as the program has not opened. I have tried going to my FTM family file itself but do not see Compact file in this menu. any suggestions. Thanks Claire

I can access the program, but sometimes it quits as I am entering data. My program tells me to compact the file (under "tools" on the FTM opening page). I don't understand how compacting the file 0.13% can possibly fix anything, but I have taken to compacting before I close down every session with FTM '08, and I get this error message much less often.

I have a Vista (Windows) version of Family tree maker. I want to transfer my info from that version to a Mac version. Which versions will be compatible for the transfer??

There is a Family Tree Maker File Migration Utility that you run on the PC to convert either FTM 2010 or 2011 files to FTM for the Mac. Here's the link to the info on

The short answer is yes, Family Tree Maker 2010 is fully compatible with Windows 7.
The Family Tree Maker team has been working with Windows 7 for several months-even prior to the release of Family Tree Maker 2010. Since the "Release to Manufacture" (RTM) version of Windows 7 was released last August, we have done additional testing in our labs as well as with alpha and beta customers with no indication of incompatibility. Family Tree Maker 2008 and 2009 are also compatible with Windows 7.
As a point of interest, it may be helpful for people to know that we continually test Family Tree Maker with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
If you find a problem while running Family Tree Maker on your operating system, the best course of action is to contact customer support which can usually help you identify and solve the problem.

Will not install

unfortunately, your computer is only 16 bit and will not load the program you are trying to load which requires a 64bit computer. two solutions. 1. get a larger bit computer or a lower level program which only requires 16bt or below.

I am getting an error message when trying to add stuff

Not too sure if problem is with operating system or the FTM program. Check if you have enough disk space. You may also need to check that your OS works properly, there is a free program for this
check your system, that might improve.
Its also worth to check for errors when the FTM is running, In Menu item EDIT run the option check for errors

How do I upgrade my family tree maker 6

The current version of Family Tree Maker is version 2010. It installs as a brand new version and ignores the old version. The old version can be uninstalled at any time.
Your version will not be automatically read by the new version. There are instructions to import your current files into the new program at this link.
There is a set of Frequently Asked Questions at this link that address the requirements to run the new version. You should read through them to make sure your system can run this program update.

Can not determine if this program will run on Windows Vista 64bit

Sounds like Compatibility Mode may help.

To configure the compatibility mode for an application, just locate the installation directory and right click on the .exe, selecting Properties from the menu.
Select the Compatibility tab:
You can choose to run the program in Windows XP compatibility mode, or even all the way back to Windows 95 compatibility.
Probably the most useful setting to start off with would be to disable the visual themes and desktop composition, if you can't get things working. If you are trying to run a video game, you will often need to choose "Run this program as an administrator". You'll have to play around with it, but most likely you can get your application working this way.

Good Luck
