I have this same problem. It will read some disc's but they're not blu-ray compatable dvd's. Everytime I put one of my blu-ray movies or a ps3 game it doesn't read it, it tried but nothing comes up. Yet it will play regular dvd's. Is there something wrong with the blu-ray player?

PS3, The amazing device by sony also has some common problems like Xbox and Wii have. But good news is that these all problems can be repaired with the help of many DIY Guides, one such guide available at PS3 Repair Blog

My discs are only read once in every 15 tries, won't this be something as simple as a dirty lense. Surely it can be fixed without having to go through so much trouble.

Like I say, it works every now and then, sometimes straight away, but when it stops, it's pretty much like it's never going to work again, until, bam... it's working again out of the blue.

I'd like a simpler solution than sending off for a replacement which is 2nd hand, or suing for gods sake.

My playstaion 2 wont play any discs

The eye in the tray might be scratched or damaged. This happens with age and the way the Playstation has been setting as well. It is more likely to wear out faster when it is standing upright. Try to play a movie or a game with the playstation in the horizontal way. If not the eye could possibly be damaged beyond repair.

Playstaion 3 games wont load how can it be fixed. the clock (loading icon) stops. no errors appear no disk shows up.

listen for the disc to start spinning

if the disc spinns then its prolly just a dirty laser lens and if it doesnt spin could be a bad laser i doubt its the blu ray logic boad cause the ones i have seen that were bad the disk reading icon never stops, this has also happened on broken lenses where it never stops. ussually if it stops its bad motor or dirty lense.

My girlfriend knocked my playstation off the table and it continued working ok but after i had turned it off and went to restart it, it wont read the disc and i cant eject the disc

The disc drive is stuck, you would have to take the playstaion apart, i assume this is ps2. you would have to take it apart, then remove the disc drive and take it apart to remove the disc. if you have warranty you might be able to get it repaired free.
