with the device plugged in, open your device manager. The device should show a yellow exclamation mark next to it. Select it and delete it. Unplug the device. Power the computer completely off. Plug the device into a different USB port (one you know works) Boot it back up If this doesn't fix it, repeat the process a few times with different ports and also using a different USB cable, if you have one.
If this still doesn't work, the troubleshooting gets significantly more complex.
Sometimes when a flashmemory stick or USB external hard drive fails because it was not removed fromthe USB port properly. If the device is removed byjust pulling it out of the USB port, it can cause the flash device to fail, youmust click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the Task Bar and select thedevice you wish to remove and only do so when instructed to do so
When the flash memoryUSB hard drive device appears to malfunction it maybe possible to restoreit by reformatting it. Insert the flash or USB hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - AdministrativeTools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted itwill indicate that it is Healthy.
1st if your pen drive has no data inside.. don't hesitate to reformat it.. then try again..
2nd check the device manager on your computer if the pen drive of yours was updated with its USB port.. just look for the UNKNOWN DEVICE in the USB port in the bottom of the device manager..
if there's no name of UNKNOWN DEVICE it means you must go to the settings of your pen drive..
just right click your pen drive then properties,, then look for the AUTO PLAY then select the action to perform..
then apply and ok... now close all documents then go to my computer and right click your pen drive and click the AUTO PLAY if its work... restart your pc... then its done... ^_^

Insert the flash drive into the usb port of the computer .Once you plugged the device it will be automatically recognised by the operating system .In case of windows operating system you find a new icon in My computer. On the icon of the usb device right click it and there will a option to format it.
if your unit only uses one cord ( USB ) for data and power , the unit side may be damaged , the life span of the USB hubs and the cords that use them are not known sometimes for no reason whatsoever they stop working , and is the most common reason for hard ware to malfunction , and it is possible to replace the outer closure , remove the HDD you can find a suitable replacement closure at radio shack for 40$ that allows you to hook up a 2.5 SATA HDD to any computer Gigaware makes a very nice portable model , if the HDD works then you have just trouble shot the closure to the HDD .
connect your hard disk to other computer which has different os like windows xp then check it is detected or not if it is not detected then it has some internel issue. Thanks
