Check these:
Can you hear the "dogs" engaging in the flywheel when you initially pull on the cord?
If you remove the recoil assembly from the engine then will the rope pull out?
Is something preventing the blade from spinning underneath?
Can you turn the engine over manually by turning the flywheel?
If you remove the spark plug will it turn over?

One of these should help determine the problem. Good luck!

DeVilbiss GB5000 Type 2 Generator. The silver piece on flywheel must be broken. It won't turn over when pulling the starter cord. How do I replace it please?

Question edited for clarity 'Devilish' to DeVilbiss GB5000 Type 2 Generator.

You just unbolt the pull starter assembly from the side of the engine. There is a clutch type unit that grips the crankshaft.

Can I put a pull start on a 13.5 hp electric start engine?

No, the compression on an engine that big would be to hard to turn with a cord start. I have seen people start engines using an impact driver or electric drill on the crankshaft nut.

It won't crank and string won't pull

Can really only be two things

1. The engine is seized.

2. The pull starter assembly is seized.

Remove that cage and see if the pull cord moves. Put a socket on the end of the crankshaft and see if you can turn it. It there engine oil in the sump?

Briggs & Stratton 9000 diagram/repair manual. For the pull cord assembly. FREE

If you are going to be repairing B&S air cooled engines, may I suggest that you make a handy tool for repairing the pull cord starter. To access the pull cord assembly, remove the blower housing to expose the backside of the pull starter. All of the B&S pull start engines have a starter clutch that secures the flywheel to the crankshaft. These clutches go bad after a while. Go to a local repair shop and ask if you can have an old B&S starter clutch. Take it apart and keep the spindle. Have someone weld a T bar handle to the spindle. You will use this to reload the spring in the recoil starter, winding backwards to load the spring. Use a C clamp to hold it in place after loading the spring. Insert the new nylon pull rope through the grommet and out through the hole in the rope spool. Tie a figure 8 knot in the end of the new rope. Slowly release the C clamp to allow the spool to rewind, loading itself with new pull cord. You need about +/- 20 inches of pull cord. Replace the rubber handle on the pull cord and you are ready to mount to blower housing back on the engine. I hope this helps. PS. Engine doesn't turn over pull cord stuck

remove the starter assembly and see if it is the recoil or engine. if by removing the recoil it recoils the cord then it is most likely a seized engine but pull the rope a few times with the assembly in your hand to check it then try turning the flywheel by hand and see what happens

The blade will not turn on my Ranch King 6.0. I cannot budge the pull cord and can barely turn the blade manually. What can I do?

check to see if it is if the cylinder is full of gasoline. remove spark plug and turn motor over.
caution, disconnect and ground spark plug wires, do not stand in front of spark plug hole, you may get sprayed with gasoline. spin motor with starter or pull rope.
if this doesn.t free up the blade look under it for "stuff around the drive shaft. clear it out.
other solutions are expensive and involve bent cranks.

I cannot pull the chord to start my CS 4210 Troy-Built Chipper/Shredder. Can you help

Can you rotate the engine crankshaft from the drive end? If ok, then remove the starter assembly from the engine and try to pull the cord. If locked, look for mis-wound cord on the spool and try to turn the spool somewhat. Any binding should be quite obvious. Hope this helps!

Cannot remove starter housing assembly on Sears Blower Vac

Take cover off were the belts are located. turn power button to off! see if the shaft can turn with a wrench. That should turn 180 degrees. If stuck you may need to forch it. Then try to pull cord.
Good luck

I cannot crank my coleman powermate generator.

If the engine will not crank-if it has an electric start, first check the battery and connections to the starter and ground. If the battery is good and the connections are clean and tight, then I would check the ignition switch. If it clicks once when the key is turned to the start position, check for a seized crankshaft (see below) If it does not click, then it could be the starter, solenoid, or the ignition switch. If it has a manual pull start, and it will not pull, check to make sure the crankshaft can turn freely and if not, disconnect the pull starter and check it again-if it turns freely the rope start mechanism is hung up-it must be freed up before you can pull start it. If the crankshaft will not turn at all you probably have a serious problem that will require a major teardown.
