Faxes with access codes or calling cards
    Think
of the fax machine as a large telephone. Numbers can be dialed from the
front panel exactly the way they are on a telephone.

    1. Place the document in the feeder or on the glass (flatbed fax.)

    2. Press the START FAX or START button. You should hear a dial tone.

    3. Dial the phone number on the keypad using your long distance code,
billing code, or card numbers just as if the fax were a telephone.
      Pause as needed for connections.

    4. The receiving fax should ring and answer.

Do I have to dial 9-1 before the area code when faxing?

Hello, If you are in an office or corporate environment where the phone system is on a PBX you need to dial 9 usually to get outside the office. If you just have the unit setup at home or to an analog phone jack (not going thru a PBX) then just dial 1 + area code + number. If the number is local then don't use a 1, just the phone number and area code.

We had a power outage and are having trouble faxing to China....It rings, seems to connect then gives no error code and puts the fax out for re-dial...Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Plug a phone into this outlet and see if you get a dial tone. If you do not you will have to call the phone company. If you can use a phone at that outlet but not your fax, then you know that the power surge that came when the power turned back on damaged a fuse in your machine. Joe

Our HP Office Jet 4255 all in one suddenly won't receive faxes for some reason. It has been working fine up until now. We can send faxes, but for some reason the phone just keeps ringing and won't...

CHECK THE TELEPHONE NO.
Verify that you are dialing the number correctly. (i know its funny to ask)

Verify that you are dialing the number correctly. You must dial all of the numbers required to make a phone call from the same line. This includes numbers that must be dialed to access an outside line or to access long distance services.

TRY DIALING FROM THE FRONT PANEL
manually dial the number from the front panel of the fax.

If you have been using a speed dial or are faxing from the computer, print the page to be faxed and manually dial the number from the front panel of the fax. If the fax can be sent when dialed from the front panel, recreate the speed dial setting and insert some pauses.

Check the connections

Check the TELEPHONE LINE

Make sure that you have plugged the phone cord directly and securely into the wall jack and into the back port of the fax product. The fax port on your product is marked "Line," "To Wall Jack," or with a wall jack symbol.

Check LIU

Make sure the Line Interface Unit (box that the phone cord plugs into) is fully seated into the back of the fax product.

Remove the SPLITTER

Remove any other devices from the line such as splitters, credit card machines, or telephone answering machines.

Can try sending the Fax on Another Line

CHECK WITH DIFFERENT CABLE
Try using a different telephone cord.

older fax machines used a 9600bps baud rate, meaning a transfer rate of 9600 bits per second. a Bit being an 7th/8th of a byte. The newer machines can transfer at 14400bps, which older machines can not read, as its too fast. thats why they asking the BAUD rate.

Is the fax line an extension off a PBX? If it is, you need to insert a 9 in front of the number. If you have to dial a 9 from your phone to dial out, then your fax machine may also have to dial the 9.

You might need to dial 9, followed by a comma or pause, if you are faxing from inside an office.

You might need to dial 10 digits, if you live in a high density location in North America.

If you're dialing a long-distance number, the person paying for the line may have disabled long-distance calling - check with parents / spouse / boss / landlord, as applicable.

Do I need to dial 9 before dialing out?

If you plug a standard phone into the line can you dial the number you want?

Do you have the line plugged into the socket marked "L" or the one with a "phone" symbol?

The "L" is line in and should go to the wall socket, the "phone" is so you can plug a phone into the fax and share the line.

Also this note is in the user guide, it may be important

NOTE Use only the fax cord that came with the all-in-one.

For more information about faxing, see the online User Guide.

Do you have the same problem with different numbers that you fax to? Are you usinga voip phone service? I use Vonage and have a lot of trouble with faxing. Call the number you are faxing to with a different phone and listen for a fax tone.
