Go to 'device manager', look for CD/DVD and ensure that the driver is functional for this specific model you mentioned. also check Toshiba website for any device updates for this unit.

Hi. I have a toshiba equium l20-198 laptop dvd burning problems

there could be 4 things that's wrong that I can think of.

1. try this first, go and force xp to take your updated drivers by telling it to install from a specific location->don't search. I will choose the driver to install->have disk->have disk->point it to the driver's location-> continue and it should install that specific driver.
2. the software you're using to burn with isn't playing nicely with your drive. try using cdburnerxp which is a free burning software and test the results of those burns.
3. the firmware on your drive is corrupted(happens from time to time). try installing a new firmware from matshita's website. remember, firmware is different from drivers.
4. the dvd drive itself is busted. try using an external drive to burn a dvd(if you have one available) or switch the drive out and see if that fixes things.

after looking at some forums, seems like this drive is ripe with issues but hopefully it's not a hardware issue in your case.

hope that helps.

Since the drive functions on a bios level, try a bios update or flash. This should bring it back.

Frst, try cleaning the lens in the optical drive with isopropyl alcohol using a soft, non-abrasive cotton ball.

If that doesn't work, we can try some high level bus settings in the Device Manager. Let me know!
