It sounds like the roller brush is going, but the vacuum isn't working, i.e., no suction.
If you have a canister vacuum, disconnect wands from hose and place hand at end of hose. If there is suction, it's fine. If not, disconnect hose from vacuum, turn on vacuum, and hold hand to intake. If there's suction here, then the hose must be clogged; or holey hose can result in greatly reduced suction.
If it's an upright, the hose could be clogged. Or the fan broken, which would also result in no suction. It would help to know what model you have.

It keeps periodically spitting out big clumps of hair dirt carpet balls as I'm vacuuming

Most likely the tube from the head to the dust bag has a clog. Look behind the brush roller; if you see a clog you may be able to clear it with a length of stiff wire. Or maybe the bag is full and needs changing.

From the first day the dust, carpet, etc.. has been coming out of the vacuum - all over, every exit point, the top is covered in dust, clumps are pulled from under the hood, and even within the extension...

Verify the bag is connected properly or that the bag is not cut. Was there some shipping spacers that you were to remove before use? Look at the owner's manual again. Good Luck

Vacuum keeps spitting dirt back out. will not **** up the dirt

Check the hose for clogs. This problem is generally caused by the power nozzle brush running, but there's no suction to pick up what it sweeps to the hose, so debris just keeps getting scattered.
Disconnect both ends of hose. Drop a marble or similar small item down one end of hose and lift hose until the item comes out other end. If it doesn't, there's a clog. You can try to clear it by connecting the hose to the exhaust port, sticking other end in a plastic garbage bag, and turning on vacuum. That should clear it.
If the marble does roll out, another possibility is a leaky hose, one with cracks, holes, and similar things that would cause a leak.
There are other things that could cause a loss of suction, but these are the most common.
A bad switch is also possible, but less likely.

Vacuum cleaner not picking up and sometimes spits ouit dirt

Check to see if bag (or if not bag then chamber is full).

Check to see if filter is clean.

If your vacuum has a bag, check to see that it is properly mounted.

Sorry I couldn't be more specific but it would help if you would specify what type of vacuum you have, whether you are using the hose or just the floor part, and where it is spitting the dirt from.

Hope this helps. If not, let me know the answer to the above questions and we'll go from there. Good luck!

My son used it to vacuum up needles from Xmas tree. It is now spitting out dust and not picking up. I changed the bag but does not help

I could not find the manual for the vacuum. I went to the Oreck site and found an online manual for my machine. I was able to take the hose apart and clean out the blockage. Also when I turned the base upside down and rotated the roller, I was able to clean that out too.

Bag indicator light won't go off, therefore vaccuum cleaner won't run. It acts as if the bag is full even with a new bag.

the bag indicator is either rusted out or broken. it only realy's on a little spring that bounces up and down so dont trust those things

Vacuum not picking up dirt

The neck in your power head is likely clogged. Disconnect from the wand and look inside. Also check the wand.Since you have suction on the bare floor the hose is likely not blocked.

Electrolux upright bag light stays on even when bag is not full

Once you change the bag, be sure to turn the machine off and back on to clear the fault. If it is the full bag light that is on, and not the "?" light, and you have a new bag in place, then you probably have a bad control valve. I would suggest finding the closest Aerus (formerly Electrolux) dealer and having them change it. It shouldn't be too expensive. If you have the "?" light illuminated, the bag probably isn't pressing the actuator like it should. When placing the new bag into the machine, be sure the bag top presses the small button in the lower right hand corner. Good Luck!

Vacum will not pick up

Due to the way carpets are made - new carpets sometimes have a lot of loose fiber. This is NORMAL and it may take 3-5 times to vacuum the carpet till it goes back to normal. Spitting out fuzz balls is a bit weird. Make sure you have the belt installed right - see video on www.goodvac.com. but the fact that belts keep breaking I am assuming that you have them installed right. Give it a few more belts and if the problem presists - let me know.
