My CD Drive is no longer working it says code 39. I also tried my external DVD drive it says code 39 as well. How do I fix this?

This problem is usually tied in with the registry. You may need a registry cleaner (many free ones, do a search). System Restore can sometimes help.

Click start control panel administrative tools computer management then select event viewer this may vary depending on what operating system you have

extend the events there you will see errors in red you will no what exactly what the error was and at what time it occured

or click start type in event viewer press ENTER

you might be able work your way through the problem

Do you have the CD for Burner?
Try reinstalling it.

Basically the read-write head is out of alignment. These drift out with use. Unfortunetly they are not economical to repair these days and just need to be replaced.
Usually you find a commercial dvd might work for a while but eventually that on't but a cd will. If you have any commercial cd's pop one inand see. The dvd requires much more accuracy but the cd is quite coarse so it works longer. Eventually it too will stop working.
At this point you have two choices, get the dvd drive replaced with a apple configurred drive or just use a external dvd or even blueray external usb drive. Those will be much cheaper and won't require any downtime or tech fees.

For that problem, Try first replace that internal DVD-rom drive other good internal DVD-rom drive. if not Also Detected or recognize.
Try this second solution. insert external USB type DVD-ROM. if not recognize also, Your operating system Have internal software device data corrupted. You need to reinstall operating System like windows xp, windows 7 (OS) etc.. to fix data Corrupted of operating system device for hardware software.

Try to plug it to other USB port of your PC I recommend you plug it at the USB port at the back of your CPU..If this doesn't solve the problem try to clean your DVD drive lenses with a DVD cleaning disc..Still if this doesn't solve the problem perhaps you'll need to contact a technician or for worse buy a new external DVD..Hope it will help you..

The external cd drive should be having both CD and DVD options, that is Combo Drive or Super CD Drive where you can write all your data on to the DVD - eitherway it can be done. You can copy the data from DVD / CD on to your toshiba laptop.

Best solution is replace the exisitng laptop to a latet one with Vista option. Will solve your probllm. Otherise try to contact the local authrozed hardware engineer to assist you in solving this problem.

You can solve this problem by going to start, then run, type regedit. open hkey_local_machine, then system, then control, then class, then 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318, once in this go over to the right hand side and delete upper filters and then lower filters. restart your computer and your dvd/cd-rom drive will work properly, if you look in device manager there will no longer be a question mark and it will tell you all is working correctly.
