Is there a way to totally reset a used ps3

Yes, but be careful if it has been soft-modded as you could end up in an endless loop. Read more about this by searching "ps3 error infinite loop". I'm not to be held liable for any damage or risk. With that said, to get to the recovery screen:
  1. With the PS3 powered off, press and hold the power button down until it beeps. Once it does, you could let go and it should power down.
  2. Once again, press and hold the power button down but this time listen for two quick beeps. At that point, you could let go and the system should bring up the recovery menu. It believe it's the last option that states 'full factory reset/restore (or similar).

EVERYTIME I START MY PS3 I GET THAT LOOP!! I TRIED UPDATING TO 3.50 A WHILE BACK AND EVER SINCE IVE DONE EVERYTHING!! FORMATTED THE DISK, TRIED INSTALLING OLDER VERSIONS AND NEWER FIRMWARE!! PLEASE HELP ME...

My guess is you're in the start-up loop, where every time you start your PS3 you get a message about a corrupted hard disk with only the option to restart. Restarting just brings you back to that message, however.

You could attempt to boot up the PS3 in safe mode and restore the file system (should delete any corrupted data). Describing how to start up your PS3 in safe mode would just be confusing, so instead here's a link to the official page on the PS3 Safe Mode feature.

Follow the instructions, and then I'd say try options 3 (Restore File System). If that doesn't work, try 4 or 5 (Rebuild Database or Restore PS3 System).

If all else fails, you could just replace the hard drive. The PS3 uses standard 2.5inch SATA laptop/notebook hard drives (5400 or 7200 RPM). They can be found online at any computer parts website; for example, Tigerdirect.

Hope it all works out!

The hard disk's file system is corrupted and will be restored. I clicked ok to restore system, but system cycles and repeats itself

More than likely the hard drive has bad sectors, that's why it's looping.

Just swap the drive out with ANY 2.5 inch SATA laptop hard drive. They sell 250gb drives from Best Buy for around $50.

Just swap, turn the console back on, and follow the instructions displayed by the PS3 ;)

This simply means...your hard disk is corrupted

I recommend replacing the Hard Disk, which is not difficult, here are some cheap hard disks

Yeah, if your not a techy person. Just put it over your air conditioning vent. But if you know computer stuff, just fix it yourself, here is a guide.

Carried out an update, but now stuck in loop

Procedure for Entering Safe mode when PS3 is caught in update loop:

When you first turn on the PS3, it will not allow you to go into Safe mode. You must prepare it for this.

link for flash drive prep:
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/SystemUpdates/PS3/pc_update.html#update_PC

(This will not work for the drive that currently is caught in the update loop. You must take the hard drive out of the PS3 and temporarily replace it with another 2.5” SATA drive. Note: temp drive may need to be initialized… Connect drive to pc, right click on My Computer and select Manage… Then select disk Management… you will then be presented with a dialogue box that will assist in initializing the disk.. However, only initialize it… Do Not Format it!(waste of time) Once the disk is initialized disconnect it from external enclosure or shut down computer and remove disk)

From the top:

1.) Plug in PS3 and flip switch in back of PS3 to on. Red LED in front of PS3 should light up. Also, plug in Controller at this point.
2.) Hold finger to I/O button on front of PS3 – Green LED lights up
a. You will hear one beep, then another single beep, then a final beep and the PS3 will power off again and Red LED will be on
3.) Hold finger to I/O button on front of PS3 – Green LED lights up
a. You will hear one beep, then another single beep, then two beeps
4.) As soon as you hear the two beeps, hold PS button on Controller
a. You will then be presented with an options screen
i. Restart System -- leads back to update loop
ii. Restore Default Settings --
iii. Restore File System -- leads back to update loop (8002F14E)
iv. Rebuild Database --
v. Restore PS3 System --
vi. System Update -- will cause error
5.) You will then remove the temporary SATA drive from the PS3 and replace it with the hard drive that is caught in the update loo
6.) I am currently stuck attempting to Restore Default Settings and Im sure it will end in error, but i have to try all possible solutions.

Start up PS3

If you have tried it a few times it may be a damaged HDD. You can do two things. Buy a new HDD (2.5 inch SATA drive) or contact Sony and see what they have to say.
