belt broke hoe do i put a new one on

  • Anonymous Sep 03, 2008

I just replaced the serpentine belt last year and now it broke, it didn't wear down like the last one just a clean break transverse across the belt. I suspect the A/C compressor or clutch has went out. How do I replace the compressor since I know that the system has no pressure or R-134 left in it. Thanks

i dont know how to change it

  • Anonymous Feb 15, 2009

The bearing in the compressor pulley is failing. You'll need a new compressor. Plan for a lot more such as a new accumalator, oriface tube, flush and charge.

I have a 99 ford mustang gt 5 speed and I had turn the temp. to cool and turned on defroster and had a real bad burning smell I pulled over and it was smoking around the belt what could this be?

I suspect that the clutch bearing on your a/c compressor is failing. This would cause increased resistance to the spinning motion induced by the serpentine belt. The belt then continues to travel around the pulley on the a/c compressor, but the pulley doesn't spin and creates added friction on the belt. After a brief period of time, the belt heats up to the point of smoldering and begins smoking. When you select "defrost" you are engaging the a/c compressor clutch just as if you selected air conditioning. Take your car to an automotive repair professional for replacement of the a/c clutch bearing or, if the clutch is severely degraded, replacement of the a/c compressor. Good luck.

How to bypass the air condtioning

Not really. I am not aware of that model being sold without ac.
So there would not be a belt and idler pulley used in place of the compressor.
The easiest way to fix it is to get a used compressor and put it on. You don't have to charge the ac for the pulley to work.

Insert the square tip of a 1/2-inch socket wrench into the square hole in the center of the serpentine belt's adjustment pulley. The adjustment pulley is the smallest pulley the belt wraps around.

    • 2

Pull the adjustment pulley toward the engine with the socket wrench to release the tension on the serpentine belt, then pull the belt off the air conditioningicon1.png compressor's pulley.

    • 3

Remove the bolts which secure the air conditioning compressor to its mounting brackets with an open-end wrench, then position the compressor to the side of the engine compartment. Do not disturb the hoses that attach to the compressor.

    • 4

Pull the electrical connection off the crankshaft sensor.

    • 5

Remove the two bolts that secure the crankshaft sensor against the engine with an open-end wrench, then slide the sensor out of the engine.

    • 6

Slide the new crankshaft sensor into the engine, then install and tighten the sensor's two securing bolts with an open-end wrench.

    • 7

Press the electrical connection onto the crankshaft sensor.

    • 8

Position the air conditioning compressor against its mounting brackets, then install and tighten the compressor's bolts with an open-end wrench.

    • 9

Pull the serpentine belt's adjustment pulley toward the engine with the socket wrench, then position the belt onto the air compressor's pulley.

I have a 1995 pontiac Bonneville compressor is locked up and broke the serpentine belt need to fix please help thanks Ron

Most cars have an option to buy a belt for a car with or without Air Conditioning. I would check first if your car offers that option (then if you don't need AC you can just buy the other belt and not have to fix the compressor). If you need AC you will have to buy a new compressor (local junkyard is your cheapest bet). I would have a mechanic install either the new belt (to make sure no other pulleys were bent when the belt snapped) or the compressor (some AC lines can be difficult or dangerous to repair or replace). Good Luck!

I have a Mazda Tribute 2001. The Air conditioning all the sudden stopped working. In several occasions if we left the AC on for too long we heard a loud noise coming from the belts. Can it be a fuse or...

It sounds like your air conditioning compressor or air conditioning clutches have gone bad the solution is to have rebuilt (or buy a rebuilt)air conditioning compressor. Do not attempt to work on thr compressor yourself unless you are certified in air conditioning, gas in system can kill you if you breeth it in.

03 chevy blazer stalls when air is turned on

Well I may need more information, but if something electrical loaded your engine to the point of a stall, i would expect fire soon. So most likely the fan motor is eliminated.

Now the A/C compressor, damaged and refusing to turn may be able to stall an idling engine, with todays cool serpentine belts... (In the olden days a belt would burn through and come off.)

The cheap solution to this condition is to turn off the car, and CAREFULLY unplug the compressor's electrical connection. Securely tie the wires out of the way, and test again...

You may want to consider repairing it, however, because the principle of refrigeration is a KEY COMPONENT to defrost in the winter...

Why? Because everyone knows a car air conditioner pulls moisture out, right? That crystal clear water that leaks out under air conditioned cars....
WELL, in the winter, rainy weather for example, is moisture. ....No remove moisture and no defogg.

if you have it on recirculate mode it will automatically cut a/c compressor on, also will be on in defrost mode.
