SOURCE: light engine/light tunnel replacement instructions

No, I don't know of one. The service manual might or training manual but you would probably need to buy that.

I've never done one on a Samsung. Do you actually need to change it or just wondering?

SOURCE: Samsung Dlp HL-R7178w not turning On.

If all 3 leds blink, it can be the lamp, ballast (lamp driver), color wheel, or dmd board (all are engine parts = engine failur). its usually the lamp, but you can listen to troubleshoot. when it turns on, you will hear the fans come up (humm..airflow noise), then you will hear the colorwheel (high pitched squeel.. it will come up to speed) and then the ballast will fire up the lamp.. if the lamp doesn't fire, you will hear the spark gap fire (a 1 second buzz noise indicating bad lamp).. the gap will fire 3 times, they tv will then retry again and again until it shuts off and kicks out the error. this power up path will help you listen to find your problem. i can assist further.

that buzzing sound is likely the power supply letting you know it is overloaded. check the output voltages for 1 that is missing or low, it probibly has a shorted component on it.

Tip

Rear projection TV displays a shadow on one corner or side of the screen.

Hi.

This tip may be helpful only if your rear projection TV is displaying a darker shadow on one portion of the screen. If the shadow shape and size will not vary, that means that there is probably a detached mirror in the device called Light Tunnel, located inside your TV.

Most rear projection TV works projecting the light from the internal lamp on the screen. Before reaching the screen , the light will pass through a 'pipe' whose internal surface is covered in rectangular mirrors, located all over the tunnel surface.

A quite common fault is caused by one of the mirror detaching from the the light tunnel internal surface , and falling down or hanging in there. This will be seen on the display as a darker shade located near to one side of the screen.

The light tunnel is located in the light engine. To repair the problem the TV must be disassembled by a technician. Accessing and disassembling the light engine is not a repair that can be done by the owner.

If you are a technician, to replace the light tunnel you will have to take apart the light engine, that apart of being quite a sensitive optical device, is also the most expensive part on a rear projection TV.

In that case you may find useful the service bulletin posted below, that is illustrating how to replace the light tunnel on a light engine for Samsung rear projection TV. Please be aware, that if you attempt doing this operation without sufficient knowledge and experience, you may damage your TV set beyond repair, as the light engine is very expensive.

Dark edge of screen

there is a part inside the engine(the part that produces the picture) that is a mirror tunnel. The actual part name is "light tunnel" this tunnel takes the light from the bulb and compresses it into a smaller beam of light that is then shined onto the DMD(million mirrors) this produces the picture on a DLP TV. this mirror tunnel is glued together on all edges. One edge of your "light tunnel" has started to come unglued and has slipped a little. This causes the slightly dark area usually on the left side of the picture that you see. the light tunnel can be replaced as a single part. much cheaper than replacing the whole engine.

Try cleaning mirror with a Lint free cloth with no other cleaning solution just dry lint free cloth. You should have Two access holes that you can pop out to get to mirror. Of course it will not be real easy to get to mirror if you do not have long arms but I have done it many times. Mirror sometimes get fogged causing poor reflection of mirror. This may help.

Replace light tunnel

a simple adjustment that in my case took only 15 minutes and not only eliminated the 3" wide shadow I had, but improved the picture quality as well. The technician compared it to dialing in the scope on a rifle. Simply loosened off the mounting screws of the "mirror-Light tunnel assembly", moved it downward slightly and retightened. Connected it back up and better then new. He did say it can require a couple of attempts in some cases but mine was the 2nd he had successfully done today. Anyone who is out of warranty, by all means try it. The assembly I am referring to consists of items 16 thru 21 of the L680 Engine assembly from my 6178.

Dlp problem

The unit has a defective light tunnel contained within the light engine. This part is not easily replaced and you will a qualified tech to replace it. Many service centers condemn the light engine at a much hight cost. Do not buy or let someone tell you the light engine must be replaced. This repair requires only the light tunnel.
